How dare those people...
There's no honor among thieves, but this is a whole new level.

how many shady divers are in the area?
:hmmm:

I wonder if what they done was illegal otherwise they aren't thieves and vandals but rather scavengers.

"She said the plaque "bestowed honor on their ship and fallen shipmates. When it went missing, the survivors felt that part of themselves had also gone missing.”"

Until now I never knew anything about this ship too bad it wasn't done sooner by reputable divers.

Tune up the RADAR and set the Ebay watch :ping: .

To veterans, it's like robbing a grave.I must strongly disagree with that.

It is not "like" robbing a grave. It IS robbing a grave. And it's not just veterans who feel that way. I hope that whoever is responsible is caught, and prosecuted to the fullest possible extent.

Edit:
This does bring up a question, though. At what point should a shipwreck be able to be excavated as an archeological site?

I think it should be treated as a tomb. would we melt down napoleon's sarcophagus in a few years?

granted, these are destroyermen, not famous french generals, but they died in battle, and thus, it is a tomb, robbing a gravesite isn't legal

"Japanese have become more interested in interacting with their history of the Second World War, and unfortunately Japanese historians have participated in distortions of the political and historical record of World War II."

And recently, anti-U.S. military presence has become more visible. In the spring, nearly 100,000 Japanese protested the presence of U.S. military forces on Okinawa

That says it all right there.

Skin head Hippys?? Uhhh..

Anyhow

Its a despicable act.

Chances are good that these items were sold even before they were removed. So much for ebay watch.

Reason I say this is that they were very selective and knew just what to take.

“In my years at NCIS, I’ve never heard of something like this,” Buice said.

He never heard of the USS Monitor or Hunley I guess? If it's 'official' you can drag up anything you want and sell tickets.

The list of war graves having been vandalized is long and distinguished. But the thieves certainly vary. From government officials, science academies, and commercial enterprise. But if your a local pearl diver, oh the horror.

This was one of my favorite American destroyers, too; she was one of the few ships to serve at D-Day and in the Pacific. I first found out about her when I bought a book with a Dwight Shepler painting (seen below) as a kid. For years her ID was a mystery to me until I managed to look up her pennant number with Conway's 1922-1946 edition.

Good point, maybe they weren't pearl divers. But someone with access to ships drawing and other historical data and the ability to read it.
