Its Sep. 27th 43
I just found 4 merchant contacts.. I got all giddy, but realized that usually means friendly (no escort)
But, I see its the italian flag, its got the lights aimed on the flag and full nav lights on (during the day too)
But I look at the flag guide that comes with the game and it says Italy is an enemy from 9-9-43 to 8-14-45
I sunk the HUGE TANKER and sure enough its a green sunk mark on the map..
Am I reading something wrong?? Whats the deal?
THANKS
There is no bug, it has happened to me earlier, when it became the day war between these two states and you are at the same time so they look as neutral, but are still enemies,You made the right Decisions :yep:

You made the WRONG decision, hence the green sunken icon.
The giveaway is usually the ship being lit up :DL
But you GET renown for sinking
If stock, you get renown by sinking enemy ships - you LOSE renown by sinking neutral/friendly ships. GWX modifies the amount - but the principle remains. On the other hand, some of us modify the files directly to alter/remove the negative amounts ....
This was not the question of a modified, without lowering a ship that had a sign of neutrality, and who also was an enemy

Yep! I lost a good amount of renown.. Which is stupid!! Its always the "to good to be true" situation.. 4 big ships, alone, 2 tankers..

...dont kick your self too much, because it adds a kind of realism to the game. i have just sunk a neutral after five hours of chasing - i didnt check the flag. i suddenly had the idea to check the flag as the torp started running: today Frank is right!!

If it is lit up it is neutral, not matter what the flag says.

Sinking a neutral is usually considered a bad thing. Part of the problem in the game is that if a neutral ship was in a convoy in real life it became fair game, and the game doesn't allow for that.
What I have done is to edit my renown so I get no punishment but also no bonus for sinking a neutral, and less punishment for sinking a friendly, since in real life it ocassionally happened, and not one kaleun was stripped of rank or command for doing it (as far as I know).
Here's how: Open your Ubisoft/Silent Hunter III folder and open Data/Cfg/Basic. Near the top you will see [RENOWN]. Part of the list says
NEUTRAL=-1
ALLIED=1
AXIS=-10
Change it to
NEUTRAL=0
ALLIED=1
AXIS=-1
to get a more realistic result.

I lowered them ship the same day that it became an official war declaration
Are you absolutely sure it was a Italian flag and not a Ireland flag instead? They are very very similar in appearance, and I have run into Irish convoys with the same consist as you have described.
HW3, there you have a good question maybe it was Ireland who was involved,but on the other hand, he mentioned the date of the attack

Yeah, that Irish flag can confuse you. I came across a nice fat convoy of tankers, unescorted and thought Christmas had come. After closing and observing the flag I realized they were neutral Irish and had to let them go. We didn't want to antagonize the one English speaking country that was sympathetic to us, or at least not so pleased with the Brits.

My thinking is that the Flaggen chart shows Italy switching from Axis to Allied without becoming a neutral, so it should not appear in game as a neutral, and especially not a lighted neutral. The Irish do appear in game as lighted neutrals.

The Netherlands flag is annoyingly deceiving as well. Anytime I see it (early in the war) I get all giddy thinking I've hit paydirt and get to sink a French ship, only afterwards to find out I made a costly mistake. Several patrols later though I get payback and find 2 large (Fra) merchants coming out of Gibraltor unescorted :DL

It should open in Notepad, which comes with Windows. Just double-click it. If you get a popup asking what program to open it with, choose Notepad.
