I've been away for a few months (DCS: Blackshark) and have done a fresh install with DarkWraiths mod. First Patrol. I've got an enemy warship at Med range- go to 20 meters, and hydrophone dummy reports no sound contacts. So I think maybe target was in blind zone of hydrophone, as I checked hydro myself and heard nada. Later on I get a visual on another warship Med range, and ask hydroman to report closest contact. He does so accurately. Then I ask him to follow nearest contact, whereas he reports no sound contacts. Then right back to asking for closest contact, and he again reports contact accurately. Tried both follow nearest and follow nearest warship with same results. Also gave this guy super hydrphone powers with the points system since he's a newb. What am I missing?

Secondly--does anyone know how U-Boats tracked targets with hydrophone only? Or did they even attempt this, by way of triangulation? (pre active pinging). Thanks for any replies.

Have read many books published back between 1952-1956 where many sub-commanders were still alive. No one of them tells how to attack with hydrophones only so I think it wasn't done until Nibelung was installed on subs. But I can't say whether Nibelung was installed on many Subs; I think it wasn't.

Not sure about that but I think when you pingpong your target it will be warned of you (and all destroyers too I guess).
But this are only some thoughts and I'm not sure about that.

There are numerous threads in the SH3 and SH4 parts of the forum about using the hydrophone to figure out target course and speed and intercept. Though not all, or maybe even none, may be historically accurate in use. But it can be done in those games. If it is possible with the GUI elements and sensor capabilities in SH5 is something you will have to find out yourself. I don't have SH5. Just do a search for hydrophone in those sections (or messages by my nickname, as I usually home in on to those subjects) and you'll find plenty.
