So Im thinking on composing a quite short but detailed guide for brand new kaulens about the basics of U-boat commanders, and would like to know that if I could get a few of you experienced Kaulens to proof read it when Im done and check for Grammatical errors as well as tactical errors (I believe I have a firm enough grasp to understand all of the basics of being a Kaulen now) I know there are guides out there already but I would like to hopefully get this stickied for the reason of that it is basic and easy to read so that new guys if they so choose to use it can get the basics down very quickly. :arrgh!:
Start with changing it to Kaleun. :yeah:

Instead of reinventing the wheel, why don't you edit the huge body of veteran knowledge we already have?

is a good place to start. You'd have hundreds of pages to boil down. And if you can outdo the GWX manual....
Because of the search function, 99% of what you want to know to play the game is right here.

not trying to re invent it. Im just trying to go off my knowledge and simplify it lol :P but good idea, the idea is have all the tips and tricks of the trade right at the start of the post instead of link a for this b for this (which I have to say alot of those links didnt make much sense to me for first starting out) and then after having to sift through 99 pages of different OT posts and then actual tips and tricks followed by some mor OT posts and such. It would at the most only be a few posts long but would be in book format that would be easy to understand( Ie. Ch1 Ch2 Ch3 Ch4) with sub chapters with a brief paragraph of two pertaining to certain things such as evading destroyers, using night to your advantage, a quick run over interception, correct firing position (I almost always use the fast 90 as I find it most effective) good hunting grounds and such)
And I know but I still think the search function is still a bit inadequate, I can never seem to find what I want even though I search 20 times or more, and yes I know how to search :P
But other than what you said, Id like to take a vote on what all topics you Kaleuns should be covered? My basic idea (dont take this for order is
A) Navigation
1 'Interception'
2 'danger zones'
3 'hunting grounds'
4 'Conclusion'
B)Attacking
1 'Types of attacks and when to use them'
2 'Torpedo attack explanation'
3 ' Deck Gun attack explanation'
4 'Conclusion'
C) Detection ( finding ships to sink)
1 'Methods of and how to use'
2 'Merchants'
3 'Warships'
4 'Convoys'
5 'Task Forces'
6 'Conclusions'
D) Evasion
1 'Running Silent'
2 'Sonar'
3 'Depth Charges'
4 Hedgehogs (I have no info on hedgehogs so if someone could please submit a paragraph or two on hedgehogs and how to counter them that would be great)
5 'Planes'
6 'What to do when Sh** hits the fan'
7 'Conclusion'
E) Crew
1 'Qualifications and what they do'
2 'Moving crew around'
3 'Promotions'
4 'How to use your crew wisely'
5 'Conclusion'
F) Patrols
1 'Smart Thinking as a Kaleun' (as in you ahve to get to patrol grid xxxx which way should you take based on situation)
2 'Resource management' (Dealing with fuel and battery and torps and such and what to do)
3 'Patroling your grid'
4 'RTB'
5 'Conclusion'
and thats all ive got for now. Ill probably add other sub chapters and re organize to fit better but yeah.

correct firing position (I almost always use the fast 90 as I find it most effective)
But right there you run off the rails. Who are you to say it is "correct"? Yes, it works for you best, because you are new and haven't set up hundreds of attacks. But there's a half dozen proven ways to get a torp under or into a hull, and those are all well documented here on the forum already.
Likewise, destroyer evasion. Intercepts. Crew management. Crew and officer qualifications.
All of that has been discussed in dozens of threads here. So (and I mean this in a friendly way), maybe it is not that the information is not there, but (because you have started a lot of threads) that you haven't looked for it sufficiently. Because, frankly, it is all there. It really is.
So maybe a boil down would be a better use of your time than writing a book... but it's your time, so ....

Not trying to actually write a book just a few simple paragraphs on each section. maybe Im getting ahead of myself, but Im talking correct firing position to a complete new person to the game, I meant to explain it as in how important it is in a patrol (if you are taking the game seriously as meant to be) to make sure you have a correct firing position (as it will make it Muuuch easier than messing with gyros) to find a solution as well as actually hit it (Since your firing at a 0 Gyro)
. But I appreciate the concern I may just try and gather it all into one place and boil it down to easier to understand terms, what inspired me was all the help I got and looked for in the first place. yes some I didnt find but others I did but it had many acronyms and or the way it was written (even with pictures) I just didnt understand some things. I may just boil it down to really important aspects only)

Aghh disregard that last post. what Im trying to say is yes the info is all here, but from my experience of jumping right into it. Its too much to just say theres info in this thread (which contains the umpteen different approach and attacking positions) Instead I want to pick the easiest/most important things and describe them so a new player could read the whole guide and have a base (ie using a fast 90 since it gives the greatest chance of success) THEN after they feel theyve mastered that they can move on to more complicated stuff... Sorry for grammer errors and such but Im dead tired and not thinking right so sorry if this isnt coming out sounding too good :P

You missed out one very important topic:
G)Bernard
1 'How to deal with Bernard
2 'What to do when Bernard makes a mistake
3 'Where to store Bernard for remainder of patrol
:D
