:D
My FlAK gunner has just shot down a plane. I think this might be the first plane I shot down ever (SH3 included), as I don't recall any of such from before. In SH3 planes were invincible for me, even in training mission, so I developed a reasonable habit of playing "I'm not even here" game by submerging fast.
In SH5 no planes has attacked me so far, and I sighted at least 50 of them total. SO when we spotted this one in the middle of the Atlantic, we didn't expect anything else - just a blind scout or... or... wait... or what? It's the damn middle of the Atlantic, no plane has right to be here on July '40... 1300 km to closest British base. This one also misbehaved - instead of just flying away, it turned straight to collision course and lowered altitude.
At Flank Speed, after hard turn to starboad, we had it on our 180 bearing. When it was within 1500 m distance, gunner opened fire, and immediately after passing over the boat the plane turned into a huge cloud or fire. No parts were seen to drop to sea. No casualties or damage were suffered. We didn't see the plane to drop anything.
As my WO later told me [Captain's Log], it was a Swordfish. His torpedo must have got stuck on release or something. Good. One Tommy less to worry about. But what the hell was he doing so far from home, where we're supposed to be safe from air threats? Time to flog the sonar guy again - he must have missed a carrier again. Meanwhile he puts on his latex underwear.
Seems it's time to watch for planes more.
PS. On the blast I dropped my last edible kohlrabi. Rolled to the water. Verdammt!
