View Full Version : 11 days since last contact, convoy radio messages
Hi all.
It is my first patrol using SH3commander, I started on 1 oct 1940.
Crossed a couple of ships in my way to the patrol quadrant, and that's all I have found so far. It's been 11 (game) days since that, I and can't find a single ship or convoy. :damn: Well. I guess sometimes the game just gets like that.
With my previous (deceased) career, I pretty much got +40k tons every patrol, so its not a problem with my hability finding ships I guess...
Well, the question is. I keep getting loads and loads of radio messages of other subs intercepting convoys at random quadrants, sinkins and stuff. I've even been
ordered by BdU to intercept this or that convoy.
Are this messages for real? I guess no, but its the first time I get them. Tried to intercept one of those convoys that was "near" (1.5 days) from me, but found no trace of the convoy...
What's going on? I've never been such a long time without a big convoy square appearing on my map... I'm sick of spending ours moving from there to there, submerging, listening to the hidrophones, etc.

Those messages are a part of the "immersion" factor in the game and are thus not relevant to your situation. They are simply "ear candy" to help break up the monotony of your patrol.
I use a mod called "WB's mission orders lite" to eliminate them. That way, the only radio messages I receive are actually relevant to me in the game, such as an order from BdU to intercept a convoy leaving Gibraltar for Malta or the British convoys taking troops to Norway in 1940. Many new players are confused by the immersion messages, so don't feel badly that you got suckered by them.
Only reports of convoys that you receive over radio that also come with an icon on the map are to be considered real. The message is also shown in the text message panel.

Middle bottom of the screen, between the officer icons and the dials showing your speed/bearing/depth.
It's where your officers "answer" you in text, in addition to the voice file playing in response to a question or command.
If a contact report comes in over the radio for a convoy or vessel that is actually being rendered in the game, it will show up there when the radio operator relays it to you. They can be easy to miss as (at least in my install) if you are running in Time Compression the TC doesn't drop back to 1 when they come in and there's no voice file played to alert you.

Always resist the temptation to chase any contact that is more than 24hrs away - you waste a lot of gas, which you need for a confirmed chase.
Rather let the contact come to you. I've spent 3 weeks without a contact, then boom, a big convoy appears. A week later I'd run out of torps and a few pennants to fly.

With stock you don't get any of the extra messages.
The few contact BDU sends are all legit.

Your now aware that most radio messages are for immersion....you can cut the number drastically and ensure those you get are pertinent to something that is actually happening/scripted into the game (GWX) by downloading and enabling via JSGME this nice piece of kit:
