View Full Version : Pooching the FAT!

Aaaarrgghhh! There's nothing more infuriating than having a target perfectly lined up for a stern tube attack, at knife fighting range and a certain hit only to see your torpedo veer 120 degrees because you forgot to set the FAT parameters! :damn::damn::damn::damn::damn::damn:

Please tell me I am not the only dumbkopf to have done this.

Ive done it on a single Mission with a FAT torpedo on accident. I launched tubes 2 and 3 thinking they had acoustic homing torpedoes. but nope it was a FAT . . funny thing was. it hit a destroyer that was coming to DC me ! :D golly I love when funny things like that happen

Haven't borked a shot with FAT parameters yet.... but I have blown the engine compartment up after firing an acoustic out the stern tube, while running at flank. :nope:

Needless to say I had to start a new career. :88)

I feel your pain there, I did it three times, twice in one patrol too :dead:.

K-61 I drove into my own fat because it was one of those backwards ones, that broke my faith in automatic so I use manual now but I sometimes have the option for auto on so I can use it if I get lazy :DL

I have none of these problems, as I only patrol up to early 1942 and hardly ever use FAT/Homing torps.

I only use fats when I'm convoy hunting, but there's nothing like having a Homing torpedo up your aft in an emergency :DL

I do not like FAT Eels, think they are unreliable, select either T3 instead which has a straight course towards the goal.

They work best in front of large convoys/task forces then your almost going to get a hit with everyone.

I've never found much use for FaT or LuT... except to avoid the settings altogether and fire them in a straight line. Could just be that I don't find the right opportunity to employ them correctly. :hmmm:

Question: one of the pattern-runners is supposed to zip around in a big circle. Is that modeled in the simulation, or did I overlook the proper setting? All I get is the usual zig-zag pattern. :ping:

EDIT - First paragraph answered by above post. Thank you! :salute:

EDIT - First paragraph answered by above post. Thank you! :salute: you so I prefer electric eels, sure it goes well with steam "also, if there is a very bad weather, but it just do not know when it embarks on Mission exasperated,LuT have significantly better characteristics when the angle of the AOB will be easier to manage.

I never used them very much, as I liked to spend my spare renown on a few homing torps, but I believe one could make them go in a circle. just mess with the dials a bit.

If your able to get close enough the steamer has the best chance of success. I've seen some ships alter course or steer away from an electric.

Possible, but personally I prefer electric eels when they are more smooth

Not a FAT fan, but I carry them anyway.

To refer to my post # 7, so I find with hindsight that FaT has not produced the desired result of the conviction, "goes its own way"

They run a straight line, unless you program them.

Gerald

certain they go straight for a specific period, but then they are unreliable

In my latest patrol I ditched them altogether. My tonnage scores do not seem to be affected much, if at all. I either get close enough to use conventional torpedoes or not into firing position at all. I'm currently in July 1943. On my last convoy attack I was in perfect firing position, tubes open and ready to fire when an escort with the nose of a bloodhound started sniffing in my direction. I thought briefly of staying up until I fired but in the end decided the safety of my boat was paramount and dove. I didn't sink a ship, but then, I didn't get sunk, either. I live to fight another day, which is really what it is all about. I'd rather have my medals pinned to my chest than mailed to Mutti.
