View Full Version : I always miss the convoy :(

Are there any guides (or videos) that show how to properly track and get into position for a convoy?
I usually just guess, and what happens is I miss by A LOT!
I always use the ruler and create a line in which way the convoy is going.. I then surface and flank speed ahead of them, stop at the line and wait.. I don't get that far ahead, but enough so they don't see me.
What happens you ask.. By the time they get to me, usually 8times out of 10, I am miles away, and have to flank speed submerged and get caught by a DD.
I know there has to be a way using the navigation tools to pin point this a little better.
Of course this is if the convoy doesn't shift in course.. but even if they don't I miss drastically.. LOL :(

if you are out of visual range and trying to get ahead, it is probably worth regularly dipping to periscope to have a listen on the hydrophone and confirm the convoy is heading in the direction you thought it was.
hopes this helps.
Convoy's might change course from time to time for navigational purposes as well. I had the luck of running into one dead on, it couldn't have been more perfect but that was an accident because I tend to avoid them till I learn how to get past the escorts better.
To start with, I make a rough calculation of how long it will take me to get into an attack position. Then I plot a circle indicating where (anywhere) on the circle may be at time of intercept. If the convoy doesn´t change course that gives me an exact position.
If I approach from behind I do listening dives.
Often I have to try several times before managing a good attack positon and it becomes a mater of days before attacking
This is the geometrical proper way to make the intercept with the drawing tool on the map:

You may need to calculate it's current position before you start drawing this, or else you will be behind. Also, if you want to end up in front of it you can also start the drawing a few kilometers ahead of the target's current position. Knowing the target speed is essential for meeting at the right time.

I always go to P depth.. But besides the line on the map from the sound gear.. How can you tell which way a boat is going with the hydrophone??
It's more complicated, and you need alot of patience. But I have made a handheld tool for that:

Or if you want to do it on the map, and figure out speed and range too:

(described in a pdf instead of a video: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=160817 )
or in a slightly different way at the start, but it is the first thread here on the forum to show it can be done methodically:
