View Full Version : Considered a cheat?

Howdy,
I was playing my first ever campaign, and after a couple months of no enemy contacts, I finally found a task force with 2 merchants and 3 escorts.
100% realism on this one, and I got lucky and hit both merchants on first attempt, 4 torps , 3 hits.
Anyways, the 3 escorts were all over me after that. I decided I had to do something about it, every time I went up to periscope they spotted me. So, I went a bit under periscope depth and use the periscope under water, turned TDC off, and let loose a torp and got one escort. I turned and fired another hit the second escort.
About 20 minutes later, the third escort was still following so I used the periscope again to find him and fired off 2 torps , got lucky and got him as well.
Is using the periscope underwater something that can be done to attack a ship that is in hot pursuit of you? I sunk 3 escorts like this. Everything is on full realism. It seems like I'm cheating because it was actually very easy.
Any thoughts?
Off topic - I just went from 8800GT to GTX460 and FPS doubled. SH5 looks beautiful.

Personally I follow the rule: Do whatever you must to live. ;)

hehehe Wolfling04, that is a great rule, and I'm sure I'm alive because I did this. :salute:

Play it the way it is the most comfortable for you. The whole idea of the sim is to have fun. :salute:

Agree, the game isn't built to be played just one way... whatever floats your boat, have fun.

Let me get this straight...you surfaced and used the perisope?:o

Sounds like the periscope is still being used while underwater is what I gather. You can't lock on but just guess the lead of the torp when submerged and set the depth.
Practically the optical range must be very limited for a "submerged" periscope even in "ideal" conditions ie day light and "clear" water.

True, but in the game you can see quite a ways when submerged even when using mods that help to limit visual range. Its up to the player I guess in the end, personally I don't take advantage of this though. :)

Good points.
Yes, I was using it underwater. I made three kills very easily and thought that this might not be very realistic. Just wanted input as to whether this tactic is common or not.
I only like playing this at absolute realism, so if this is something in real life that cannot ever be done, I wont ever do it. :-)

Or you can just try my underwater mod which has all this and much more.(minus the ship wakes which is just kind of silly to not have, I know they show through waves, but I still say it is silly to not have them).
It's in the download section under graphics mods.

I disagree sir , he is after 100% realism . My underwater blurr completely blurrs the underwater so you cannot see anything and so its realistic .

Yes, the visibility should be limited, but it is, as I undertand it, a practice that exists today. I have been told that USN submarines regularly look for hulls when approaching periscope or comms depth or when surfacing. From that, it seems that the view should not be completely obscured.

Which mod are you talking about that completely blurs the underwater? Not the mod where you set the disp to 0 through the pfx files? All that will do is disable the disp normal map for the underwater. Which I have already done through another means in my underwater mod.
In my underwater mod, the way I limit the sight range is by cutting the underwater light level down. And I have been able to implement light diminishing even further at night. That way, you can see clearly for a short distance, and then it gets harder and harder to see things the farther they are away.

My underwater mod works like this basically. If something is close to the sub, you can see it relatively clearly. But the farther away the object(ship or otherwise) the harder it gets to make out what it is until you cannot see it at all.

Agree. SteelViking's mod helps out extremely to avoid sight while underwater, a must have if not using.

See through ship wakes is terrible, especially for the full realism player. As a captain of a sub I get the feeling that I am not going to see ship wakes anyways. Seeing wakes through waves in your scopes is the worst immersion killer for me. Hence why I made the mod.

I am sorry for the way I worded that statement, I was in the wrong, and I don't mean to belittle your work. I agree that it is a big immersion killer to be able to see the wakes through the waves. I just think that we should try to find a better solution(making the waves more opaque) than completely removing the ship wakes.

Once V1.2 of my interior mod is finished. I may just look into this wake problem, and see if I can fix it. I would think that it is a shader problem. In which case, W_clear would need to be included in the attempt to fix it since his Environmental mod would surely touch the files in question.
