Hello everyone.
have always been a fan of sub sims, my favorites probably being 688 attack sub or wolfpack (going back to the 16-256 screen color days)..
Purchased SHIII last week and have played around 8 missions in career mode (i think i picked 1942 for whatever reason) Ive been lurking around here ever since.
About half of the missions take me down the coast of africa which end up being fairly sleepy campaigns. Sleepy until I try to raid an allied harbor on the African seaboard anyway. The others take me to grids between newfoundland and NYC or the caribbean which prove to be heavy with task forces, planes, and rough seas. I guess I average around 5-6 scalps during a single mission. I like giving out medals and upgrading people's talents, a lot. (I got the iron cross first class last night!)
I wish my boat could run submerged for 12 hours without having to run it at the lowest speed. I'm thinking about fashioning a snorkel out of drinking straws and seeing if that works.
I suppose my only complaint would be not being able to see the merchants flags without getting, what seems to be, inordinately close. Even when I am close, sometimes the rendering is difficult to see. And cooler damage/explosions when I deliver my greeting cards to said merchants. I've seen the lifeboat and some of the damage mods, but, I'm not too sure about modding the game yet. It's probably no big deal, but, the evening i could spend figuring it out, is one I could spend sinking boats.
Anyway, cheers!
Chris

WELCOME ABOARD! :sunny:
You're in for many years of addiction. I'm sure others will immediately start telling you to get this mod or that, so I'll just say have fun with it as it is, and as soon as you feel ready start asking. We're full of friendly people who will do anything to help, including mailing you mods if you can't download them.
That's not all we're full of, but I'm too polite to go into that in public.
:rotfl2:
And say goodbye to sleep, girl / wife etc. :salute:

I got SH 3 last night. considering i had nothing to do today. Ive been playign it trying to perfect manuevers for the past ... ohhh lets see its 2pm now and I was playing since 10pm last night. Ridiculously addicting. especially when you were sooooo close :ping:
A few weeks ago I spent 28 hours nonstop playing this game. Being a highway trucker for 25 years helps condition your bum to that sort of thing.
I've also mailed out discs in the past to poor folks stuck in rural areas with dialup. The furthest I mailed one was from Canada to the Australian outback.
Unfortunately, there is no SH3 equivalent to methadone, so if you get addicted to killing ships, there is no withdrawal method. Enjoy your new obsession with the rest of us loonies.

Well firstly get MultiSH3, install copy for each supermod, add a couple more for mixing up other mods and then play away (no, not like that :nope: - in the game). Mods are a must, and easy to use with JSGME :D the longest part will be downloading them but then the gameplay after will be so much better.
Oh, and welcome aboard :salute:

And learn how to use it. Very handy tool to have.
You can get the templates to make it in this thread:

And you can get the instruction booklet on how to use it in this thread:

I have got SH3 commander and GWX and it runs fine (20-30 fps in harbor and with LOTs of activity around and 60 out by myself) i just wish my graphics card was alot better so I could have better looking water (My water all looks opaque and ugly at the moment, no reflections) but I think ill be getting one soon :) and if I get a better CPU all together. :timeout::timeout::timeout: Say hello to SH5 and IRAI to me as well :) cant wait to see the new damage in GWX!

Thanks for the welcome everyone! E RegioSommergibile mi piace a vedere una persone d' Italia. Studio la sua bella lingua :)
My first questions:
does anyone ever use active sonar? if so which situations?
does anyone use radar? if so which situations?
I have a naxos (or is it metox? I forget) radar detector. I also know the allies made a radar detector detector. Is this modeled in the game?
I've seen the "sweet spot" charts you guys made. Are these charts for the unmodded version or just the GWX?
I read an interview with a developer that stated that you could listen in on enemy messages if you were on the right frequency ("sos" or "sss" messages) did this make it in the game?
I also found your charts for the milkcows. Are these present at all times in campaign missions? (I just spent 3/4ths of my torpedos trying to sink c3 cargo and c3 tanker.. they just wouldn't go down!)
Thanks!
Chris

I was just trying to keep him from getting overwhelmed with the usual "You MUST get THIS first! and then here's a list of 132 extras you need."
Yours is a good start, but might be a bit confusing.

Welcome aboard, Chris. And might I add that the title of this thread is so very true. :haha:
I'll try to answer some of the questions as best as I can.
I use active pings to get range to any contacts that I might be tracking while I'm underwater. Very useful when I pick up a vessel and want to determine if they're moving away from or toward me. An all-around good tool to have.
I usually keep radar going any time I'm on the surface, although later in the war it becomes more risky for the boat. After that it's a crap shoot.
Unsure of the sweet spot mod... there may be versions for both GWX and stock SH3. The one I use is for GWX. [EDIT] Come to think of it, this is a drop-in replacement of the recognition manual diagrams. Should work either way.
I don't remember if the SOS/SSS messages are in stock, but they are in GWX.
Unable to answer your question about the Metox. Someone here will certainly know for sure, though. :yep:
@USNSRCaseySmith - I'm unsure of the milkcow charts. They might be part of Carnavaro's Document Collection. :ping:

Hope this helps. :salute:

The allies never developed a radar detector detector (nor did they use radar detectors themselves), and no such thing is modeled in the game.
It is right that Mr. Snestorm says, but because the enemy had radar, and it works in a similar way, then it sends out the EMP and the discovery of equipment that was

Don't listen to this. You *NEED* to use exactly what I tell you to use, or you will forever be a noob that is hounded mercilessly until we drive you away from ever wanting to play a submarine simulation as long as you live. You won't even like regular soap anymore because it sinks, and will be so disgusted with anything that submerges you'll only buy Ivory soap. You will also avoid people named Perry, and foods like eel and asparagus.
If you happen to drive by "Carl's Donuts", your head will explode like a ship loaded with ammonium nitrate.
That's how bad it will get.
Not really. I am just joking of course. Play the game the way you want to play it, and have fun.
