Wannabe SH3 Skipper

I have ordered a copy of SH3 from Amazon and wonder what I need to get in order to be ready to install the latest GWX3 and SH Commander?
I've tried to make sense of the download section that mentions a 1.4 patch that has to do with multiplayer which I'm not interested in. Are there other patches I need to get up to speed??

Patch 1.4 is all you need to install to run GWX and SH3 Commander. From there you can look around and decide whatever else you might want to add, but I'd say GWX+Commander is a good starting place.

When your copy of the game arrives, you should install it using the "no-disc" method, links to which are provided here. This will both allow you to play without requiring to have the DVD in the drive all the time and also to prevent the StarForce protection drivers from being installed. I would expect, though, that your copy will be the new one without SF on it. Once you have installed your game, remove the disc from the drive and start the game. When it is loaded your version number should be displaye somewhere on the screen, lower right corner if memory serves me. If it says 1.4 you are good to go.

Depending on the version you bought from Amazon, you need the 1.4 patch. It may allready be patched up to that. But GWX 3 expects that specific version, whether you want to play multiplayer or not. So, installing a fresh new game, patching to 1.4, and installing the GWX mod is enough to play GWX. If you also want to install SH3 Commander then you need to add a config files pack to SH3 Commander:

It does nothing with the SH3 game folder, but it adds/changes files in the SH3 Commander folder to keep the compatibility.

Oh yeah, if you have Windows Vista or 7, don't install them in the default folder in Program Files. Specify a folder path by yourself that is outside of that. (Also not in the documents folder as some people attempt)

If he ordered it new he shouldnt need it. I got my SH3 last night and got SH3 Commander installed and working fine. I think if its brand new its already patched to the latest version?? Im installing GWX 3.0 right now though! cant wait!

I'd love to get my hands on one of those SF-free discs. I have a SF DVD but I know how to install it with the no-disc method; it would just be nice to have a patched and SF-free disc. What are they charging for it?

I got mine for 12??? ordered it from Amazon, it even came like 3 days earlier than expected too. what is SF any ways?? like the older version of the DRM?

Yes. It was a scheme called StarForce. A lot of folks had problems with it, such as not being able to use their burner drives. It was a ham handed method of copy protection which actually only inconvenience honest customers who bough the game. Pirates just used a hacked game. Ubi caught a lot of flak over it and dropped it from all of their new games.

I picked up one at a local computer store for $10. Same price on Amazon, unless it's gone down.

I thank you all for your quick replies, looks like SH3 is still a very popular sim :DL
I've had SH4 for a couple of years but never really got the hang of targetting so have not used it too much. My plan is to use SH3 for my U-boat aspirations, and SH4 for my USN cravings. I've tried OpMonsun but after a while started getting CTD's so I think I'll just specialize :)

I don't know what I'll get from Amazon, it doesn't specify but I'm sure with all the input here, I'll have no trouble getting it going, thank you all again :up:

I picked up a copy from Amazon about 3 months ago. It was already up to 1.4 and no sign of the Starforce nonsense. I don't need the DVD to play. I just installed the game, installed GWX, then Commander, then the config, and that was that. All good.

Just remember to install it outside the programs folder, and you should be good to go.
