VIENNA (AP) — A U.S. envoy on Thursday suggested time was running out for Syria to cooperate with a U.N. atomic agency probe of alleged secret nuclear activities before the agency invokes its seldom-used authority to call for a special inspection — a possible prelude to U.N. Security Council involvement.

Rising to Syria's defense, a senior Iranian diplomat accused the organization — the International Atomic Energy Agency — of harassing Syria by leveling false allegations in collusion with Israel and its allies.

The two officials spoke as the 35-nation atomic agency board meeting turned its attention from the agency's probe of Iran's nuclear activities to suspicions that Syria has a hidden nuclear program.

Israeli warplanes bombed what the U.S. says was a nearly finished nuclear reactor three years ago, launching an agency investigation. After an initial visit to the site, agency inspectors have not been allowed to return — or visit other suspect sites — and the agency's chief, Yukiya Amano, says Syria's lack of cooperation could mean that information sought by the agency could be lost with the passage of time.

Hmm, I got a wacky idea, just for S&G, for the novelty of it, how about the United States just butt the hell out of this? I think we have enough chestnuts in the fire at the moment.

No one elected us to be the world police and as a matter of fact, many resent our presumption.

Right because Syria and Iran are just so trustworthy, and the IAEA is not...

That is a strange story, Syria and Israel turned the page on this episode a long time ago. No one has any burning interest in pursuing the story.

I suspect it has more to do with putting pressure on Syria and/or Russia over this:

Russia: We will provide Syria with advanced missiles, despite Israel, U.S. protests

Russia plans to go ahead with its sale of advance anti-ship rockets, state news agency RIA Novosti quoted Russian Defense Minster Anatoly Serdyukov as saying on Friday, despite recent attempts by U.S. and Israeli officials to thwart the planned deal.

The deal involves the sale of advanced P-800 Yakhont supersonic cruise missiles to the Syrian military, weaponry which Israel considers as capable of posing significant danger to its navy vessels in the Mediterranean Sea.

The pieces are of course mobile, and has a decent range, which can easily be redeployed if necessary

They might go good with Syria's new Iranian built Tir missile boats, if they can squeeze them aboard.

Quite true. Could make the next Gaza flotilla intercept scenario a bit too interesting. Looks like another job for the IAF.:)

Because we all know it is a perfectly reasonable concept to try to tackle all the world's problems and act like the world's policeman when we can't even solve our own problems here at home to begin with.
