After a slightly shaky (SH5 style) release VStep the developers of the Ship sim series are hard at work adding more features and fixing bugs. They have also released a trailer of the game's core campaign highlighting the game's new environments, ocean systems & firefighting missions. View it here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5HjtAfOgEuA)

A demo is also promised, hopefully later this week.

@kptn Kaiserhof

You probably played the original 2006 version of the simulator both the 2008 version & the newly released "Extremes" have full exterior + bridge walkthrough modes.

Although from the trailer it appears a bit like a simplistic kids toy it is actually more involved than it looks, in many missions you are actually in command not one but several vessels this particular aspect is most fully realised perhaps when captaining a huge container ships whilst jumping between her 3-4 attendant tugs to try to ease her in and out of berth or through a narrow channel etc.

In the multiplayer mode while commanding a container ship the tugs are then of course played by real players and the challenge then becomes one of communicating your requirements to them rather than directly.

The professional version of the sim (Nautis) based upon the same core engine is actually sold to many large shipping companies and maritime schools worldwide for training their cadets.

It would be nice if as Microsoft did with the flight sim series we could have a "Combat Ship Simulator" variant. Sonalysts & VStep might be a good marriage!

The Silent Hunter series has always been geared towards the 'gamey'. Ship Simulator is a, well, simulation. This means that it is going to be detailed in modeling real world systems, have a more detailed physics model, etc. Crew interaction and pretty pictures take a back seat in this genre. No, it is not for everyone.

Personally, I have played each version released, and find them very enjoyable.
