View Full Version : Aaaaarrrgghh! CTD's when loading a save
Verdammt! Another entire successful patrol lost because of stupid CTD's when reloading the saved patrol. Three separate saved files for the same patrol and every one crashes to desktop upon loading. W7 64 bit, installed outside of program files. I'm beginning to wonder if I have some hardware defect with my new notebook. I have never had such terrible luck with reloading saves on my XP system.

I got that problem too but it says abandoning mission? what?
It's probably the situation of the game in which you saved it that is the cause, like being submerged, or other units being within your 3d bubble. The GWX manual has a list of most if not all bugs and quirks that applies to SH3 (not just GWX). And usually explains ways to solve or prevent them. If any savegame position in the list causes a crash then consider it a loss and go back one save. There's no point in wasting time to resurrect it.
Or you have enabled/disabled mods while you were still on patrol, which the savegame relies on to function correctly. Graphical user interface mods are usually no problem, but whatever deals with 3d models and other units and campaigns likely does affect savegames.
If the game runs (or has worked good before) then it probably is not caused by the OS. Temperature issues are unlikely at this point, because the graphics card didn't get to do much work. A memory glitch is possible, but then you would have experienced more spontaneous hangs or crashes of the whole OS. So, focus on how you saved the patrol.

Rule of thumb for save games is never save underwater, and never save within 50 (or maybe 30) kilometers of another unit. Sometimes you may get lucky with a save, but it's best not to take chances.

Try not to delete the default 'Player' name that comes with the game....some of us believe that may have a detrimental effect.
What then has the opposite effect!
I did save when I was near Brest on my way home. I should've just sailed into port and ended my patrol. I am beginning to think I have a problem with the hardware on this new notebook. I've had other apps lockup or quit on me. Looks like I have some serious diagnosing to do.

Saving near land is also not recommended, IIRC. I think it does wacky things to any nearby ships or something :hmmm:

Yes, any ships patrolling the harbour areas lose their waypoints and sail in a straight line regardless of whether there is a harbour wall or river bank in front of them

So, in theory, creating a profile named 'Weiss Pinguin' should turn your game into a crash free sexy beast? :D

I'm aware of that bug and never do that. When I said "near land" I was I was still several hundred KMs out to sea.

What *hic* drinks cabinet? I know nothing! *burp*
Just had another one. I was near the Azores and trying to approach a convoy when an escort began to ping me. As he ran in to attack, CTD! This was not from a reload as I was still live after leaving Brest. I've definitely got to test my RAM, and if that doesn't reveal anything, I'll see about sending it back for advanced diagnostics. These CTD's are really beginning to hack me off; they happen at any year in the game. I'm pretty sure it's not the game but something with my OS or hardware.

Heat perhaps?
As I as before, take time off today to check what is wrong

You mentioned using a laptop, I assume that its got its own dedicated video card unless you're using an old one. Heat has caused several CTD's with several of my games, with all the fans/exhaust vents on the bottom the heat dissipation is horrible. To finally fix it I put some large rubber feet (like the ones under a stereo receive or dvd player) that raised it up about a 1/2" and has pretty much solved the overheating problem (on my laptop if it goes beyond the threshold it shuts down the computer and kills all processes (like a windows version of kill -9 SH3) in order to turn off).
Yes, it is a notebook [I loath the term "laptop"] but is a high end one, the ASUS G73J series, all top spec. This baby has two fans pushing air through the chassis from front to rear, unlike many which force it out the side or through a single rear vent. The temps on this thing never get higher than the 30's and I always use a fluted hard support base. She's getting all the air she needs. ATI dedicated graphics processor @ 1GB. This thing smokes, but the CTD's are getting to be really annoying. They don't happen all the time, just often enough to irk me. I make a point of having 4 or 5 save points throughout a patrol. I'm going to be leaving it on all night tonight and run the full version of Memtest to see what that reveals. I'm really hoping it's just a bad RAM stick from the factory as that is the easiest fix.

Here's hoping that is what's causing the problem matey....this is quite puzzling.
Did you try removing recently installed mods? I have been having ctd's quite often but after removing some they all stopped and I didn't have a single ctd after (I even save underwater, near land, when spot convoy etc if I accidentally shutdown my pc, happened once and now I'm carefl with my career progression)

Sorry to hear about the problems you are encountering with saves. Making saves regularly during a patrol may sound like you are ensuring that if something goes wrong one of the saves will come to your rescue. This is not always the case, unless you exit the game and reload the save each time you make one to verify they work OK, they may all be corrupt. As I understand it if you make a save but do not exit and that save is bad for some reason, then all subsequent saves will also be corrupt, like a chain reaction. I always save and exit after a session playing SH3 and each time I do this I save under a different name. That way if my most recent save goes bad, I know that the previous save did work. I lose a bit of progress but not the whole patrol.
Recently there was project being undertaken by a few on Subsim, looking into the save game problem. As far as I am aware, they have yet to report on their findings. Does anyone know if this work is still ongoing?
