I know that the MK 10 is considerably less explosive, but should a destroyer really be able to take a hit and ignore it? I ran into a task force of about a dozen DDs and a LC today and hit three of the DDs. One I can see not being hurt too bad because it struck extremely forward. The other two are less understandable. One was struck directly below the forward turret and caught on fire, while the other was struck just forward of where the port propeller shaft exits the hull. Neither suffered any loss of speed or showed any sign of flooding, and both continued to attack as if undamaged. Is this normal?

Using TMO...that explains it...I've hit DD's with one M14 and it still goes on. Different factors, but most DD's in TMO take 2 M10's to do some damage, may sink later. Usually 2 gets them dead in the water, one more to sink it, but have also sunk many with 2 hits.

I went through all sinkings a while ago and made a database.

65% of US submarine attacks on escorts where 1 fish hit resulted in a sinking. 82.35% of escorts hit with 2 fish sank, and no escort ever survived 3 or more hits.

That is with all fish, so the vast majority of these sinkings were with mk 14s. Note that damages also include a few cuties that I could not subtract out since they were not separated (very few such attacks though).

No hatsuharu (or follow on) survived more than 2, some sank with 1. No Asashio/Kagero/Yugumo survived 2 hits, many sank with 1.

The way I understand it in SH4 the DD has a nose damage zone that is just way too invulnerable. For that reason the "up the poop chute" shot is much more effective than "down the throat."
