Did Columbus need a dock to land in the Americas?

If you want to attract the attention of ET there was a guy in the 1800s who had a brilliant (if crazy idea)... build a massive dish many miles across and fill it with Kerosene (or something similar) then light it on fire in a regular pattern. Visual SETI. If ETs don't use radios they should at least be able to see in some spectrum that would notice a huge fire... :hmmm:
