View Full Version : Stem Cell Donor Refuses To Help

I opened the newspaper today and couldn't believe the headline.
We've got a 7 or 8 months old baby, Maxi, in the region who is suffering from Leukaemia. Without a donation of stem cells the baby will die. After a lot of effort a possible stem cell donor could be found in the USA. Now about two weeks later that guy simply quit. All that is known is he refuses to help. No explanation or anything towards the family of the kid. What sort of person does one have to be to do that? How can anyone be so cruel to simply decide to let a baby die?
If you should read this, yes you, the guy who ran from responsibility, then ask yourself whether you will be able to live with that decision for the rest of your life. It was your decision that the boy won't see his second birthday and it's not too unlikely that he won't even see his first!
Do you know what America wants to stand for? Strength, virtue and gallantry! Do you think you act like an American should? Step in front of a mirror, look yourself deeply into the eyes and then say with pride: I'm an American!
If you can't say it anymore with a voice full of pride, then rethink your decision and give that boy a life.
However, if you can still say it with pride then you really should see a doctor as there is something seriously wrong with you and you are behaving like the worst of people that your countrymen fought here in Germany 65 years ago.

This is Maxi and he depends on you and you alone!
I would appreciate it if some of our American freinds here could spread this over some US forums, no matter how small the chance is that this man will change his mind. I'm just so angry at that decision...

If he first said yes, raising hopes, and then said no, this however would be a very bad conduct. However, we do not know the background and reasons.
If you do not want to donate, it'S better not to even enlist for such a program. And if his data popped up from some pool of earlier patient history and data, they should better check with patients whether or not they accept their data being used for later general searches for donors, or not.
If the person raised hope carelessly, and then let it crash by changing his mind as caressly, too, then he is a Charakterschwein.
I do not like that there may be installed a general claim of the community for people's organs aftr their death that is valid even without them having agreed to that when they olived. Some politicians in Germany want to chnage it like that. Then you would not need to carry a written declaration of permission by yourself that you will to donor your organs in case of your death, but you would need to carry a declaration that you do not allow it. That is a reversing of they way a free society works, giving the state medicine a claim for your body in principle, and that is no donor of yours anymore, then, but a legal duty. And that reminds me of the medicine as it was understood in the Third Reich. There such claims for certain patients bodies also were made - with patients still being alive.
Or a declaration of objection gets lost. Or is intentionally destroyed. What then? Take what you can, and run?
That blood and organs are in short supply, is no excuse for changing the system as fundamentally as some want it. Another PC stunt that demonstrates that totalitarianism and communal conformity is very much acceptable especially for those yelling loudest against it - if it serves their ideological commands.

If he refuses after saying yes before I surely hope he meets the same fate as the baby. Finding out one day he has terminal cancer, Piece of filth.
Then again maybe it might be better if he just took his own life instead. Would be better and fit more into his coward image he wants for himself.
Just be aware almost all Americans are the same as that sack of crap. Americans donate blood all the time. More and more are putting the donor heart on their ID.

I regularly give blood in the UK and have also registered as a bone marrow donar. The are desperate for donars but after several years I've still to hear anything back! It's really quite infuriating to think that I could have helped somebody by now, and be ready to do it again? :nope:
It's a shame that there isn't somebody less that 4000 miles away that could help!
Agree with the topic starter, if he was gonna bail why donate in the first place?
Had he not strung them along, they may have found another suitable donor and the baby would have been saved.
Thats the problem here, its not that he said no, it the fact he strung them along....
I hope that same thing happens to him one day when he needs a new heart :dead:

Unlike some of you fellas I'm going to reserve judgment until more facts come in, if they do at all.
Poor thing to do? Yes possibly, but without knowing any of the extraneous factors in why he decided to change his mind it's dishonest for myself to come out and say he is the "scum of the Earth".:hmmm:

Bone marrow isn't even required. All that is needed are stem cells from the blood.

If he first agreed to help and now bails out....then...:nope:
worst thing you can do to a family with a case like this, give them hope and then trash it right out the window.
and all that's required....like what? a tube of blood...comon.:shifty:

Do we know everything about this story? What if wxe let the "Characterschwein" open his mouth and explain his reasons before condemning him?

If it's a woman's body when it comes to having an abortion, then this is the guy's choice when it comes to his body. Wether or not he agreed in the beginning is irrelavent.

This.
It's very easy to drop the hammer on this guy, and if it comes out that he's deserving of it then by all means drop every hammer you can find, but do we even know why he dropped out? Is there any more information on this story anywhere? The man might've died for all we know from Schroeder's post :hmmm:
How many times have you had to drop out of something you agreed to do because of unforeseen circumstances? Granted it was probably never something this major, but we just don't know his circumstances. (As far as I can tell)

thats kinda crummy that he backed out.
Unfortunately if there was more proper research done with stem cells they might be able to do these procedures more easily, or at least have stem cells on hand so donors aren't as necessary. But sadly, The Jesus patrol has been throwing wrenches in the works for years. Ironically, in this particular case, the victim is one of the very babies "they're trying to save".
stem cell research can save a lot of lives, and improve countless more. Imagine growing new arms and legs for the amputees of Afghanistan and Iraq, or even restoring movement to a quadriplegic

without knowing why this guy backed out, it is difficult to form an opinion on this matter.
Sorry to hear about your kid. I hope you can find another donor. :yep:

I don't see a reason why the family wouldn't have been informed about a medical reason. Just a line that it is to dangerous for the donor for what ever reason. Since nothing like that has been forwarded I doubt that there is a medical reason behind it. I would really love to hear the version of that guy but unfortunately he has chosen not to add ANY information to why he has decided that way.

If I find you lying in the street bleeding to death, shall I then say that it is my cell phone and therefore I decide whether I call an ambulance to save you?

I understand your point, but that is not a very good example. Should you find either of them in that condition, it is due to the fact that a crime has occured, whether direct violent crime or someone having fled the scene of an accident. As such, you would be required by law to report the crime.
I do understand that leaving a person without a donor after having pledged to donate is highly unethical and morally repugnant, but it doesn't match up with that example.
