I have just installed the first radar set on my VIIC; I forget the name but it is the first one offered. Do I have to manually operate this or will it run by default? I realize that it is limited in sweep to ahead of the boat and will later be replaced with better sets. Will the Allies be able to detect my radar emissions?

Thanks.

If you have a man in the radioshack just tell him to do a continuous sweep and he'll keep going until you dive or stop him. If you go under a wave, though (like 10 meters or so), he'll turn off the radar and leave it off until you tell him to switch it back on. Makes using the radar in high seas a bit of a drag :shifty:

Also, merchants won't have radar detectors, but assume any escort you come across does. Late war it's pretty much guaranteed they'll know you're there if you use radar.

Haven't used it myself for a long time, but from what I remember, it is activated automatically when you surface. You need to go to sonar/radar menu and tell your man to switch it off.

If you don't, you're going to start being very popular with the RAF, from about 20km out of port onwards, as well as being target number 1 for any DD's in your vicinity.

(Yes, in terms of giving away your location, the emissions are pretty much the equivalent of having a neon sign on your bridge).

I don't bother equipping it, but that's just a personal choice.

The first radar had its limits, you had to steer the boat at any angle for optimal contact, and it was extremely sensitive to high waves, the next generation where you had 360 degrees which was much better, but the radar does not need to be on all the time, when there is a risk of revealing your position

Thanks for the advice, guys. I'll pay more attention to the new radar next patrol.

Not to add anything shocking but, the allies did not have radar detectors.

They didn't need them as there radar could pick up a uboat at greater ranges than the uboats max radar range. There are no concealment penalties for leaving your radar on.

ASV radars, which basically works the same way, with regard to pulses so then you can say to them indirectly, "had it" even if it was radar etc.

K-61 seem we are playing in the same time. I too play DiD and make a new Kaleun at the exact same date my old one died and I too just got my first radar :hmmm:

Last night I was leaving Brest and was out in the Bay of Biscay when I got a message about radar detected. I now have the "Biscay Cross" on my turm. I dove immediately and eventually there were were three ASW ships ahead of me. I assumed they were a hunter killer unit and avoided them like the plague.

I also noticed when I left port that there were two red bearing lines pointing back into harbour. As I was surfaced I assumed they were from ships in port; this is the first time I have seen this so I have no idea what those red lines were.

Thanks for the advice about radar detectors, Snestorm. I'll leave mine on all the time and see what happens. It may help me to detect merchantmen in low visibility conditions.

First time I had one of those, I was starting a patrol in Kiel - and the RWR was CONSTANTLY going off. I finally figured out that turning it on in the middle of one of the busiest Kreigsmarine harbors wasn't such a hot idea .......

correction: not RWR (brain fart) but FuMO 29 GEMA radar - and the constant calls from the radar operator about ships detected .....

(thanks Vendor)

Sometimes it's easy to forget the Allies weren't the only one with radar

In my patrol I have tracked a convoy. My radar is showing red bearing lines which I have used to do an end around on the convoy. I got into postition and torpedoed three freighters, only to get a CTD. I have had three CTD's on this one convoy! :damn:

Could be a problem with one of the ships in the congoy :hmmm:

I just got my radar as well. Here's hoping that I don't catch any CTDs. Hmm... Yeah, that sounds kinda bad with that particular acronym. :dead: ;)

I wouldn't fret just yet about CTD's. I've had a number of them or lockups since I got this new rig. I suspect I may have a bad RAM module. If so, it'll be under warranty. I just have to wrap up my game and do some in depth testing.

The new radar has been working well for me. I've been able to use it to track convoys, but it does get exasperating getting the ship sighted call every couple of seconds. I think I'll install the mod that gets rid of that. Radar detector has been working fine as well. My latest patrol zone south of Iceland seems to be swarming with aircraft. Fortunately I have been able to dive away, but once I got caught and bombed while I was still close to the surface. I had a bunch of areas damaged but soon patched them up. I have the longer repair time mod installed; it sure gets rid of the game's arcadish damage model.
