I was on my patrol and I dived to check my hydrophone. The hydrophone picked up a lone merchant so I surfaced to attack. I looked around on the UZO and spotted not just a convoy and not just a large convoy but two large convoys either side of me short range. I was spotted by about 30-40 escorts about 10-15 could open fire due to bad weather. I fired off the last of my eels and sunk one ship before diving to evade escorts but they've already won because my batteries are low and my u-boat is badly damaged. About 10-15 warships are dropping DC's and about 20-30 are closing in to drop some more. :o

Any help?

I once got caught between three convoys in the area between Ireland and the Hebrides, where the convoys have to funnel through to approach Britain. It's a good hunting ground until massive air cover drives us away. I had been hunting one convoy and was flanking it when I saw the lead escort from an outbound convoy approaching. No choice but to dive; then a third convoy appeared! I had no option to attack and would not have if I could; with that many escorts available it would have meant certain death. I went quiet and as deep as I could. When it was clear I hauled out of there.

Unless you are extremely lucky, you are dead. Chalk this one up to experience and console yourself with the notion that "it's only a game."

K-61 I did do a sweep should of put that in sorry but the weather was so bad could barely see. I was just able to make out a ship that looked like a T3 tanker and it was.
I only could see the convoy once we surfaced.

In that case you shouldn't feel like such a dumbkopf. What time of the war are you patrolling? From late 41 onward I consider all surface targets to be armed and do not risk surfacing until I can visually confirm that the target has no guns.

1943 But I know my boat can handle a few armed merchants or a cocky warship. I sunk the Revenge surfaced with only my deck gun, now I'm looking for some other Battleships, they're not as all powerful as they're cracked up to be. Once you get the big guns off you're good, all they are now is a very fast armed merchant. (Except the fleet carriers, attacking them surfaced is suicide even I have limits :dead:)

What level are you playing on, and with what mods? A submarine's gun is useless against the 5" guns of a destroyer, let alone 8 15" guns on a battleship. In real life that 3.46" popgun would bounce of the turret armor of a battleship and barely scratch the paint.

Update: I've sunk to about 150m before becoming stable again, still ok some of the escorts left but still about 20 left but is hard to judge due to the fact theres so many! :arrgh!:

I think we may have to cut off your ration at the Night Club.

1) to my knowledge, Revenge tends to shoot back. Accurately. With far bigger guns.

2) Revenge usually has a group of friends with it who are also armed and particularly good at swatting flies.

3) Revenge usually travels faster than a surfaced VIIB at flank speed, and you say you were diving and surfacing, reducing your average speed to far under flank.

And I have never seen a T3 Tanker in GWX... only in stock.

So... let's put that schnapps down and order a cup of hot coffee, eh?

So, not only did you sink Revenge, using your deck gun, in a flank-speed race over a 24-hour period, at 7000m to 400m, but you also sank her escorts using torpedoes? In GWX at 100% realism?:har:

Believe it or not I was actually out to get a convoy so all I had were Fats in the forward and a Fat in the stern, its a simple trick let them spot you dive to PD let them come then set the fats to um....search? the area premature, all hit but most were duds I reloaded hit the rest attacked the Revenge.

(Same thing I do with convoys)

Oh OK, so instead of engaging the Revenge in running deck-gun fight for 24 hours, in which you also killed her escorts by torpedo, you ... what... reloaded and what?

And capital ships don't try to ram you. Other than shooting at you and zigzagging, they don't take tactical measures.

Why don't you just take us through the engagement play-by-play. Because what you are describing is one for the history books.

:yawn: sorry I'm tired OK heres what happen as far as I remember.

OK after I destroyed the escorts I surfaced to take on the Revenge, it opened fire with its front gun killing my WO and destroying my flak guns I got 3-4 shots in before her guns reloaded, I was using the UZO to target her when she turned and when I saw all the guns on that ship I had the sudden urge to use the loo. It fired and they all missed, well they fell short by about the length of my arm, but the morale dropped nearly as far as my jaw.

Not so lucky next time they all hit but the big ones missed I think, the game changed to Cat and U-mouse. I dived went low and fast and ran,
I think she made room in her schedule this is where most of the 24 hours are. After running around for a long time, suddenly, "NA:shes going down"
I was like "Whaaa?". I surface no Revenge only a fireball sinking into the sea. Back to base check the logs "OMG! I sunk the Revenge"

Now no more 20 questions thats the whole thing (Well I had to cut it down a bit).

More important, if you are in enemy areas, don't rely on your sound man. Go yourself and have a listen. It sounds like you may have clicked on 'follow nearest contact' button, so of course you got one report.

Listen yourself, the scope around making sure to watch the sky for aircraft too.

the 88 would not have the power to go through a tank at 7km, nor the accuracy to hit it more than 5% of the time in absolutely perfect conditions. whats the chance of the guns on a battleship being disabled, when the round has a chance of nill to go through the armor, while shooting from a rolling and pitching platform while moving and shooting at another moving platform and doing this with only 200 or so rounds? I also forgot to mention all these rounds being HE and thus having little to no penetration ability, and even less accuracy due to inherent ballistic characteristics compared to a solid or semi-solid AP round.

Correct. Also, lest some people confuse the issue, the 88mm gun on U-boats is not the same 88mm gun that terrorized Allied and Russian tank crews. That gun was a flak gun and was the basis of later dedicated anti tank guns and guns mounted in tanks like the Tiger. The 88mm gun on the U-boats was simply a naval gun of the same calibre, but not of the same punch as the land version. There was simply no way the 88mm naval gun would even injure a battleship, let alone sink it. The belt armour on some battleships was as thick as eleven inches, perhaps more.

I have shot down a plane with the 8.8 in stock, i shot down a liberator somehow (my crew shot it down) also in gwx i shoot down airships in a custom mission with it. (again it was my crew doing the shooting)

can anone compare the differences between the naval 8.8 and the tank hunter 88 shell?

The foreshortening of the horizon lets us see Ramillies' dire predicament at the hands of your hardened gunners, yet your delicate, graduated shading of the water tells us Ramillies is many, many kilometers away -- probably so far away that its crew is looking upwards, sighing "Whence this deadly rain of shot and shell?" as their ship Kasplodes under their trembling feet.
