View Full Version : What are the coolest games OST in your opinion ?
Personally I'd say snowboard games have the best soundtracks. :|\\
1. the full Cool Boarders 2 soundtrack (can't find my fav track from it on youtube but you can get a fair idea about it through this one (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sYYYXuU9bYI))
2. SSX 3 : NERD - Rockstar [Jason Nevins remix] (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zyCtfkQit6U) http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/Panzer_Kamerad/smileys/hb.gif
3. SSX Tricky (this one is bad-ass, really, my FAV one from the whole SSX serie) : MixMaster Mike - Slayboarder (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uN3k09Va9ys)
More to come. :hmm2: :DL

Best OST? The Command and Conquer: Red Alert games... :03:
... and the Original C@C...
Just about anything by Nobuo Uematsu
@ TLAM :
@ Oberon : I'll look deeper into this guy's discography. While we're talking about japanese people, let's mention Akira Yamaoka. Listen to this one (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6qalGezr76o) (from the Silent Hill 2 soundtrack), I'm sure you're going to love it. ;)
I came across 'Promise' in a mod for another game, the 'Reprise' version and yes, I fell in love with it then.
Uematsu did just about every Final Fantasy soundtrack from II through to XI, as well as working on the soundtrack for Chrono Trigger.
I would list my favourites of his...but to be honest, just choosing a couple is very hard, One Winged Angel and Dancing Mad are very epic though. :yep:

When you mention original soundtracks, I think of titles where the music was used to maximum effectiveness ingame. In that regard, I would hold Myst to be an excellent example. Yes, it is synthesized and dated, but it was very atmospheric.

Would say
Shogun Total War has a great OST: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4IU7ia0XIGg (this has to be one of my favorite)
and Lords of the Realms II also had great music for it's time, the music kept me in the mood:

I have to agree with that. I'm not a person with a lot of appreciation for music, but Klepacki's work in the C&C franchise just fits really well with the games. Aside from that, the battle themes for CnC Generals were pretty good, too. I particularly like "USA Battle Theme 1" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g4aPMo7TcR8 and "China Battle Theme 1" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Anro5IZm5Hg
I don't know Klepacki had anything to do with those, but I thought they were pretty good.
Shogun Total War has a great OST
I never played Shogun but I think some of the battle soundtracks from Medieval and Empire games are great, so it wouldn't surprise me if Shogun was good too. I feel the same way about Homeworld. The battle soundtracks were great but sitting through forty minutes of the "nothing is going on" soundtracks while you mine resources after you've killed everyone but before you make a jump were just punishing. I think an industrial-sounding track would have been more interesting. I mean, the music wasn't bad for the setting, but when it was combined with the extremely tedious wait for resource vessels to make their trips and the repeat of the same track, it got really boring. Thank God for the "quick harvest" option in Homeworld 2.
A tie between Hearts of Iron II and Over Flanders Fields.
I loved the music from HOI II. The track "War" was particularly awesome when it happened to synch up with a major offensive: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qsXm0y7z0Gc&feature=related
It becomes particularly awesome at 2:08:DL

Oh yeah :yeah: Also C&C, some of the Call of Duty games (MW2 was scored by Hans Zimmer), gawd there's so many I like. EndWar (http://endwargame.us.ubi.com/article.php?news_id=9304) has some great backround-actiony music, I put that on all the time when I play games. Fracture (from Lucasarts awhile back) also had some good music, but they never released the soundtrack :nope:

EDIT3: maybe Metalheads are in fact a pretty linear descendant of Hippies. Metal descends from Psychedelic Rock, we've got many norms/values in common, we've got our hair dress in common (long hair)... I know we are somehow connected to Hippies, but maybe that connection is stronger than I first thought.. anyone care to elaborate?

Anyone else kill the music in games?
Most games, yes. Especially racing/other sim games and RPG's and shooters. Nothing bugs me more than when I'm racing there's some odd electronic music going insane in the background. I can't hear my car, I can't pay attention. :dead: Or when I'm walking in an open world game...unless it's an in-game radio like Fallout, I'll kill the music on all others except for Elder Scrolls. Those always have good music.
Some games stand out with the music.
That said I like all the RA music and the BF1942 was kind of punchy.

A subject for debate; music can be very intrusive and it's good that we can usually turn it right off if we choose. In some games ("The Saboteur" and "Prisoner of War", to name two) it complements the action immensely, as well as being important in helping you gauge just how much danger you are in.
http://i.imgur.com/MEdifes.jpg I think the music in "Death To Spies" intensifies the drama of escape...

TES Morrowind. It's just right and pretty monumental which again makes it right for that game. Also, works well on a stereo if you don't mind short tracks on repeat like if you were say, a goldfish.
Ultima Underworld. Context sensitive soundtrack in a time when soundtracks were mostly beeps and boops. Added immensely to the gaming experience then as it still does. Few UW players can hear that tune today and not see themselves running around in dark caverns.
