So if any of you British people have paid more tax will you get interest and penalties off the government on top of what they owe you like they get if you owe them money?

Add another 5.5 million people affected prior to 2008. I have to :har: or I'd :wah:

@ Tribesman

This is how it will work.

If you owe extra to the Inland Revenue you will be notified between now an Christmas via letter which has a payment cheque enclosed for immediate return.

If the Inland Revenue owes you, it could take up to 4 years to get the overpayment back. Which you won't actually physically see as it will be an amendment to your PAYE code.

So, it's "pay us NOW" vs "We'll pay you when we feel like it".

I'm ****ing fed up with ineptitude of our Tax bodies. You spend hours on the phone to them and they still get it wrong.

Looking at my tax band and the amount paid I'm praying crossing every limb in my body for a rebate http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/9425/praydl5rp5.gif

Somehow I doubt it though because rumour has it those in long term employment are not as at risk as much as those who have changed jobs/employers on occasion.

Handy to know. Any loopholes to force HMRC to pay a lump sum to us (if we're owed) rather than an adjusted PAYE code for the next tax year?

As if! Lol.

About £2bn was underpaid via the Pay as You Earn (PAYE) system in the past two years, with about 1.4 million people owing an average of £1,500 each.

Wow. That's pretty ridiculous. I'm not talking about the accounting descrepancies - those are to be expected from overbearing, inept, arrogant, socialist, revenue-stealing agencies - I'm referring to the acronym "PAYE". I mean, really? That's the best they could do? Gee, I can't think of anything I'd rather read on my earnings statements. Maybe when they forcibly extract their 2 billion pounds from the taxpayers they can afford to hire a PR guy.:DL

If I get a red letter I will tell them to stick it with the sun dose not shine. I've had run ins with these jokers in the past and gave them a good verbal punch in the face and won.

That's all well and goodbut in the case of a PAYE employee you wouldn't normally correspond with HMRC, that would be done by your employers payroll section.

I wonder what the chances of them being sued by the individual employee for something along the lines of 'a failure to carry out their duty of care' would be?

Even if it were possible I doubt many would risk their employment status by carrying out such a course of action.

We'll probably see a deluge of no win no fee solicitor adverts on the tv shortly :DL

Just for the record....nothing appeared on my door mat this morning...early days yet :-?

Unlikely I would have thought. It seems like it's a case of HMRC being given the information but not getting their act together and working out the tax properly.

If they try to extort 'underpaid' tax from me though, they can **** right off - damn con artists. :damn:

You could be right but the bottom line is....anyone under the PAYE scheme will have very little if any say in the matter :nope:
