View Full Version : Should I purchase SH V?

I know this subject has probably been worn a little thin, but if I don't ask for help,I will probably have a bad go of it with SH V.The main reason I'm a bit on the iffy side is because Ducimus is negative towards SH V.A man of great respect such as Ducimus among we submariners is to be listened to when he gives his thoughts on a new sub sim.
I keep reading post that if one uses the modders products,SH V isn't too bad,and I plan on using the mods for sure if they will make the sim playable. If someone could give me a hand with what mods are best,I would be very thankful.
I have a very capable Alienware puter,so that isn't a issue.
I'm still playing SH IV,with Ducimis's latest mod,and I enjoy it a great deal.Thank you again Ducimus,as you make a lot of us skippers very happy with your efforts!
I would really appreciate some help on this decision.
Thanks in advance for any help.
P.S. I'm checking the mods right now to see what they do to help the SH V problems

If worse comes to worse, you can just put it on the shelf and wait for the mods to mature.
EDIT: Do a little reading here. You'll find plenty to form an opinion, and you'll find no shortage of those here.

I'm thinking this would have been a good game to have a demo of, you know like they did back in the day. Do they still do demos anymore?

The only reason I can see not to buy SH5 is if, like me, you oppose the DRM on principle. Otherwise yes, there are problems, but many of those who are now playing it are enjoying it.
There are others who have it and don't like it, as you have read. If their complaints aren't things that bother you, then you should indeed buy it and play it. If those things do bother you, then don't buy it. Or read the threads of the same title as yours that get posted here on a regular basis.
But you posted that Ducimus produces good advice, which he does. So why ask at all, unless you are hoping someone else will talk you into it?

Ditto on what takeda said.
Its entirely up to you, and theres about 2000 threads of information about the game.
My suggestion is to form your own opinion, its just about the easiest thing possible. Ive had no problems with DRM, and SH5 is a great game.....For the most part.
im not a big realistic nut like everyone else, but ive started getting into it. SH5 STOCK, i say again STOCK, is, as its been said before, an arcade shooter for anyone who has been playing the SH series/ other subsims.
Ducimus isnt a god, although he is and should be a respected member, and while he may not be fond of SH5, lots of other respected long time members like it. Take sailor steve, whos title "Ancient mariner", serves him well. Hes been around for a long time not only in the forums but also in life (respectfully, of course). He likes SH5, just not DRM. DRM detracts so little from the game, even though SOME people have serious technical problems with it.
Its your 50-60$ to spend, and therefore your opinion is what matters most. People have different views on it. While Stock SH5 is fun sometimes when you just wanna blow **** up and use like subnuclear deck guns nd stuff, but with serious mods it becomes Quite enjoyable. However the campaign is annoying, and if you have a 50 year old POS graphics card, like me (at least in comparison on how it performs in SH5), it makes my FPS around 9, which is terrible and THAT REALLY destracts from gameplay.
It TRULY isnt as bad as people say/infer it is. Its like your own little baby (although the emotions are a bit dubbed down). On one hand its beautiful and you love it and its wonderful, however there are some things that it does that are annoying and bad like soiling himself and being difficult and needy. however once time has passed and things change, it grows into an amazing little boy, whos not difficult, or annoying at some times, and he helps out alot.
Thats what SH5 is gonna be in a year maybe, when super mods and serious AWESOME mods improve it so well it becomes a favorite and you wanna play it all the time.

:haha:.
But you did, and often post beautiful screenies, indicating you play it and take the time to modify pictures from the game, as opposed to not thinking your wasting your time with such a terrible game.

Form your own opinion then don't buy the game...:D

Well, let's just say I support the game. I can't truly like it or dislike it, as I haven't bought it due to the aforementioned DRM. I like the screenshots I've seen, I don't like some of the things I've heard.
I will buy it first chance, and I will play it some and work on it some in my limited way. But I will probably keep playing SH3 and SH4 as well, at least until SH5 can do all the things I want. Of course some of those things haven't been done by any game since AOD and SH1, but SH5 still gives me hope due to all the work which apparently can be done to it.
So right now I still kind of fall into the "Support it but can't really give an opinion yet" category. :sunny:

Definately buy it, i dont understand how can others say dont buy it.
One day this game will be prefect, its worth the money.
Im not playing SH5 again until its on par with modded SH3. Ill wait years if I have to, right now ive lost interest somewhat so Im in no hurry.
To my taste SHV still needs the Type IX and 43-45, everyone seems to have forgotten this fact under all the bugs, other shortcomings, Uplay fiasco and everything else....
Oh and need more units:
Merchents
Aircraft
warships
NPC Subs
(in that order)
When we have that Ill play it again. And im not just gonna sit on the fence and wait for others to do it either, I have about two dozen 3d models (units) that I want to contribute -and get them imported myself, but I cant deal with it at the moment. Too many other things going on.

And the winner of the "most number of references to Ducimus in a single post" award is... pocatellodave!!! :yeah:
Seriously, here's what you do: point out SH5 to your significant other, just the cover will do. Do so on-line or in a store, doesn't matter. Mumble something about it being that game you heard about. Then forget about it.
If your significant other follows the Subsim trend, then in a week or two you'll be the proud owner of a copy of SH5. As you didn't buy it yourself, you'll no longer have the quandary about whether to buy it or not. And, as a bonus, if it sux, just blame your partner. :yeah:

Ditto what JU88 says, plus more details like the ability without a $10,000 license to make new ship models to add to the five targets available. AND the ability to lend, give away or sell the game on the used market. But that comes under Steve's DRM situation, which bothers me too.
It's all fixable if Ubi wants to fix it. But they have no way to monetize the solution so the solution will not come from them, at least not soon.
It sure is a good thing we have SH3 and SH4. It makes SH5 much less aggravating because we have other great World War II submarine simulators that work. I find myself just not caring whether SH5 gets fixed or not.

IMO buy the game when and IF you find it for around $20, i wouldnt recommend paying more based on my opinion of how unfinished and arcade like the game is in its stock form.
yes mods do a lot for improving the game greatly but that doesnt mean you should give UBI more money (or heaven forbid, full price :o) just because modders working for free on their own have made the game better.

The bad outweighs the good right now.I have one sim that has the DRM thing.I don't like it,but it really doesn't effect game play.Apparently the DRM issue has big problems in SH V,and keeps some players from playing the sim,and that's not good. The issue with the hard code bothers me the most.As it's un-fixable,and the modders can only do so much.If one has SH III and SH IV,it's hard to put them away for SH V,that is flawed and it may stay that way with the hard code issues. The 2nd patch concerns me,as if I understand correctly, the team has been pulled off SH V,for another sim,and maybe patch #2 is vaporware.I'm sorry about Ducimus, but I respect his wisdom, and Steve I respect yours as well, but I think I have the right to ask questions on the forum w/o being chided for asking in the first place.i have listened to the responces, and made my decision to wait before I purchase SH V,to see if it becomes worthy of buying.
Thanks to all for the help.

Yes you should buy a copy of SH5. Then take the disc, nail it to a frisbee, and fling it over a rainbow.
I don't know if this will mean anything to you but this is how I feel.
When I leave port in SH3 GWX and I see the bands playing, nurses throwing flowers, planes flying overhead and traffic in the harbour you realise it's all about the atmosphere. Even the inside of the sub in SH3 is more appealing to me despite all the additional polygons in the SH5 interior, the problem is that most of the interior is a walk through once experience as there's nothing else to do and I play with a GTX480 were both games play maxed at 60FPS.
BUT this was all created by modders and maybe modders will get SH5 like this too hopefully.
I wish I could mod myself but with a wife and 2 kids and a career I don't have the time or patience, that's why I love their work so much. Because I know how hard it is to dedicate free time to doing the work they do.
SH5 is a decent game and I really do hope that the modders have the time and patience to get it up were SH3 is. If you can get it cheap enough then it's worth the admission fee alone, just don't expect SH3 or SH4 fully modded.
But then why would you when you consider SH3 and 4 when first released.

You can pick up SH V for 20 bucks, and that price will keep dropping I'm sure.We can all hope SH V is fixable, because in all honesty,pc games are becoming rarer all the time.SH III is the epitomy of what the modders can do to make a sim a classic.Hats off to Subsim, and the modders.

The question about fixing the problems in SH5 is not a question of if, but a question of when. I myself have not expected one more ounce of help from Ubi since patch 1.2 came out, but you don't see me giving up do you? Give us time, and everything can be solved.
I was perusing on eBay when some how I stumbled on this bid for SH5, I looked it over and it is certainly genuine, since you have a key and can register online and the seller was reputable with 100% positive feedback. Now I had a laugh and thought I'd place a bid on it for $5, it also had postage for $7, but never once did I think I would win it at this price, bidding was to end in the early hours of the morning (around 5.30 am), next day I checked the emails to find I had won it for US $10.23, AU $11.50 delivered (by registered mail no less)!:o

Jumpin Jebus on a pogo stock.
Look, im flattered some people think so highly of me, but seriously:
I'm just a guy like anyone else here., I do not know it all, I do not have an authoritative opinion, which is just that, an opinion. I put my pants on one leg at a time.
I'm just a guy, who had way too much time on his hands, that often enough gets really snide and sarchastic. I have my moments were im totally talking out of my ass, and I have my moments were i'm really rough around the edges. Any of the forum old timers could tell you this. Hell, ive probably had administrative action taken upon me for longer then most people here. Including Dowly. Again, any of the forum old timers could tell you this. I'm no saint, I just have a big freaking mouth. That is all.

And you have moments when you are spot on, and make everybody else feel inadequate. That's why in spite of any lip I give you you have my absolute respect. Anyone who disagrees just needs to read the "A Brief Introduction to the Pacific Submarine War" thread.

I consider it conviction. Forming your beliefs and sticking by them, without sitting on the fence and worrying that you might upset someone. The former commands respect, even when in disagreement, the latter apathy.
For example, JU and I have numerous stoushes, but I'd still buy him a beer, because even though he's always wrong (that's a joke - I'm an INTJ and that is my "prayer") he's not afraid to "put it out there". But those who "don't want to offend the devs" or "don't want to upset whoever", meh...
At that price you will get alot from the game and yes, I agree, I admire steelviking for what he does and plans to do.
Hopefully himslf along with TDW, privateer, reaper7 and others will make a supermod once they figure out how to import ships into SH5.
At the moment it's the most dissappointing thing about it, the lack of variation in planes and ships.
