Pretty interesting stuff, here. I wouldn't consider myself a heavy drinker, but now and then I like to hit the sauce - great for relaxation and social livelyhood and all that.

Now to find that maybe I'm not drinking enough???

PS: I guess Dowly's gonna live forver. :D

After finishing my Physics degree I took a year studing pedagogics, and read several papers using regression analysis to find correlation between sociological parameters like grades and family income. After seeing what you can come up with I have lost my faith in regression analysis as a scientific tool unless its used in conjuction with some repeated experiment.

This is a classical example, note in specific the line:

"But even after controlling for nearly all imaginable variables - socioeconomic status, level of physical activity, number of close friends, quality of social support and so on"

Since you only can account for almost all variables but not all I do have trouble believing it. The important part is the causal explanation offered. Is it sound?

In this case it actually might be a sound explenation:

One important reason is that alcohol lubricates so many social interactions, and social interactions are vital for maintaining mental and physical health. As I pointed out last year (http://us.rd.yahoo.com/dailynews/time/hl_time/storytext/08599201433200/37388588/SIG=120qc49jb/*http://www.time.com/time/health/article/0,8599,1928187,00.html), nondrinkers show greater signs of depression than those who allow themselves to join the party.

But actually most people I know who abstains are more social than my average friend, so I don't think this will apply for them anyway

Just kidding.

In all seriousness, that was the point that stuck out most to me as well.

I just checked the fridge and there's only one beer left.

I think it will be enough to keep me alive until I can get to the store tomorrow.

But payday's not until Wednesday, and I don't think my health plan is gonna cover this as a routine preventive expense.

Curse you, greedy bean counters! :stare:

I've been saying this for years but my doctor doesn't believe me. She'd rather say things like "James, you can't drink that much without incurring serious negative consequences" and other assorted medical technobabble.

Hr. Hibbert: Homer, you've ingested a dangerous amount of alcohol.

Homer (sluring): The only dangerous amount of alcohol is none.

What a load of tosh!

Give it six months and they say its bad for you but eating chocolate coated in butter and lots of salt is good for you. That is to say, for a while then drinking like a fish is good for you again. :rotfl2:

I saw a buddy of mine do a 24. oz. in less than 7 seconds.argh! you US weirdo's with your crazy measuring systems!
Hmm.. according to google, 24 oz is about 70 cl, wich would make about 3 glasses.

At our study corporation, the current record for 1 meter (13 glasses=286cl=97oz.) with 4 persons (so that's the time for 4 glasses (about 88cl/30oz) a person) is 10.3 seconds. This includes time for taking and putting back those 4 glasses. We do have single glasses of 50cl/17oz that we occasionally down, but we usually do not measure the time for that as all our records are on the meter.

Current record for 1m for a single person stands at 2.49 minutes.

Personally I can drink a glass in about 1.5 seconds. But as you should know this time increases exponentially with the amount of beer you drink:O:

Thats the time for a yard of ale isn't it

Lord_magerius
08-31-10, 05:54 PM
Pint's are easy, can knock a pint back in about 2 seconds, a yard requires skill as you have to drink it all and not let it spill all over your face.

I'll see if I can get the cam working to show how necking a pint is done :O:

Best comment so far: "I'm holding out for beer-battered beer."

I like the part about how eating the stuff is just like taking a bite of pretzel and a sip of beer, only without having to suffer through the delay and effort of raising a glass to your mouth. Because that's such a PITA, amirite?
