View Full Version : Thanks for the upgrade.... NOT!!!!!

I'm a little annoyed. I'm running SH4 1.4 stock and intend to upgrade to 1.5 and TMO once I finish my first carreer, but I might be changing my mind about that. I'm hoping this is addressed in 1.5/TMO.

I just returned from my 8th patrol and received a Medal of Valor. My boat (Salmon class) also received a "half cut tub" upgrade during the refit. Basically, it looks like my conning tower got streamlined.

Here's what ticked me off: When I entered port, I had Improved SD Radar, SJ Radar, Twin AA guns, and a 4 50 deck gun. After my "upgrade", both of my Radar slots were "Empty", my AA gun was back to a single, and my deck gun was down to a 3 50. The boat still has the same name (Snapper), so I don't think I was assigned a new boat.

So, I had to spend some renown on getting all the equipment back, which is annoying itself but, what really made me blow my stack, was when I left on my next patrol. I HAVE NO RADAR!!!! NO SJ!!! NO SD!!!! NOTHING!!!!!! I do have the twin AA gun and the 4 50 DG back.

I reloaded my save before I entered port, thinking I screwed up somewhere, and went through the whole process again. I triple-checked that I had Improved SD and SJ Radar in the slots before taking my next patrol. When I left port for my next patrol.... no radar... not even SD. What the Hell?

I know it's just a game and that it's just "modeling" real life, but I can't imagine any skipper putting up with this crap in real life and leaving port with far less equipment than he came in with, especially something as vital as SD Radar. To add another WTF? aspect to this. I returned from my last patrol at ~2030 on November 24. Departure on my subsequent patrol was ~1730 on November 25. So they did all this to my boat in under 24 hours?

I'm currently about 20 miles outside of Brisbane and I'm seriously considering taking the renown hit and ending the patrol right now. Maybe I'll get my radar back. They're sending me to the same area I patrolled last time and I encountered heavy air coverage there. The SD saved my bacon more than once and I'm not happy about not having it.

Thanks for letting me vent. Are situations like this addressed in 1.5/TMO, or are situations like this historically accurate?

I have 1.5 with TMO 2.0.
My prob is the surface search radar (SJ), exactly as you describe. The air search radar (SD) works as per normal (mainly I assume due to it being completely AI controlled and "automatic"). I can say the SD works as I'm still getting warnings of aircraft in the vicinity etc.

Given that I have 1.5 and TMO I guess the problem is not addressed unfortunately. I'm considering re-starting my career but I've done pretty well in this one so far and am not keen on tossing in the towel even lacking surface radar.:hmmm:

as somebody replied to me in my thread which is similar:
yes an upgrade will strip you of the gadgets

as for the things not working when you buy em back: have you tried saving, quitting and loading?
get the upgrade, save, exit. restart game and reload save to go on next patrol. somehow i always feel that rebooting the game in port helps

I haven't gotten out of Brisbane waters yet, so I haven't seen if SD works. I do not see an SD attena on my tower, though. That's why I'm thinking it's not there.

I'll give the save/reboot/reload a try. Thanks.

Make sure you Save & Reload the game while still in Home Port. After reloading the game, check what weapons, sensors and personnel are available again. You might just see a few surprises that weren't there the first time around (depending on any mods installed).;)

That's funny.

I've never got the conning tower upgrade from the beginning of the war to the middle of 1942. :hmmm:

SJ radar fix is included in this beta release of sorts here:

edit: semi outdated changelog I posted awhile ago for above mentioned link here:

Thanks (once again) Ducimus;

I'll get on this ASAP and download. I'm definitely curious about the After Battery stuff.

Thanks, Ducimus! Reading your change log has really made me reconsider finishing my current (first) carreer before upgrading to 1.5 and TMO... I might just bag this carreer and go for the upgrade/mod now.

OK... I'm sticking the proverbial fork in 1.4. I tried all the tricks mentioned above and still don't have SJ radar. Based on what I've read on Ducimus' release notes this issue is resolved in his TMO mod. I'm ponying up the $10 bucks, buying the U-Boat mission pack to bring it up to 1.5 (through the link on Subsim.com of course), and downloading TMO 2.0.

I had intended to complete my first carreer under stock 1.4, but the benefits of ending my current carreer and going with 1.5 and TMO just seem too compelling. Besides the SJ radar issue, I'm getting tired of having to dive every 15 minutes of game time for aircraft. Looks like TMO 2.0 addresses this as well (at least in the early and late war periods).

Also, and please correct me if I'm wrong Ducimus, it looks like I won't have to creep along at 9 knots for maximum fuel efficiency but can now rip along at ahead Standard.

One more thing about TMO: I think it's pretty cool that the guy who wrote it is an active and obviously well respected member of this board. That's a further element that made me decide on the TMO mod.

Now... let's see just how deep this Salmon class will go.

Looks like ~440 feet and it's sleep with the fishies time.... :dead::salute:
