MOSCOW (AP) -- Russia will launch its manned space missions from a new center in the Far East in 2018, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said Saturday, as the country seeks greater independence for its space program.

Putin made the comments as he inaugurated the start of construction for the new cosmodrome at the former missile defense base of Vostochny, outside the town of Uglegorsk, 3,600 miles (5,800 kilometers) east of Moscow, and a few hundred miles away from China.

Russia currently uses the Soviet-built Baikonur launch facility in Kazakhstan for all of its manned space missions and other commercial launches as well as a smaller center in northern Russia for military satellite launches.

Kazakhstan will be peeved, there goes a lot of money and jobs. I can see why Russia wants it own place inside it's borders. Kazakhstan may be friendly, but it has been unstable.

Kazakhstan will blame Borat for it!

And don't forget that it's Vladimir ("Chuck Norris got nothing' on me!") Putin. He will undoubtedly be commanding the first mission.

Space Ranger Putin will no doubt shoot Mars with a giant space crossbow. The bolt will be attached to a cable woven from adamantium and the sinews and tendons of his enemies. This cable will allow him to tow the planet into Earth's gravitational field, where it will remain in orbit for easier access on future visits.

However he will not actually need the cable, as Mars will be captured by the sheer force of his overpowering charisma and come along quietly.

Does anybody else wish that Putin would run for President of America? I would so vote for him?

Infact I would vote for him to be president of America for the rest of his life.

What a senseless waste of 2 perfectly servicable moons, though. I hear Russia has been wanting to stick it's flag into one of those for a while now...

Yes they have, as have we. When we go to Mars we might land on one of the Moons first and set up a base.

Mars is the Grave Yard of the Solar System, only half the missions there succeed, NASA has had slightly better success than the Russians 65% of the US orbiters and 86% of the landers succeed.

Of course their are many theories as to the high failure rate... (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LOqoljJ0ees)

You mean "I show you Kuzkin mother"? If so, what is this have to do with Putin or any present Russian politician?

Maybe Putin should go to Venus, the Russians put landers on it's surface. Putin would love the place, poisonous atmosphere, acid rain, high temperatures and a higher gravitational pull. It would remind him of himself!:rotfl2:

...and a higher gravitational pull. Incorrect, Venus has slightly less gravity than Earth:

I believe you are thinking of the higher atmospheric pressure from the dense atmosphere.
