Right, so we've been thinking: might be nice to get a group together for some gaming. We've already got the Lolwaffles for Il-2 and SSC for ArmA going here, so maybe we can expand into some new territory.

Focus goes to more realistic games, first person shooters mainly, Red Orchestra for example. Something like Men of War (real-time strategy) gets my vote as well, but haven't really discussed it yet.

The idea is not to form a strict group, just to make some connections between people so you know there's always someone or several people you know you can play a game with. Personally I'm not (or was not) that big on MP: I just started exploring that as I made some friends here on SS really. Seems that all too often you just get stuck with the wrong poeple if you don't know anyone.

Before nailing down times and a name, let's gage if there's any interest. So, feel free to comment on the idea. Any thoughts and suggestions are welcome.

Actually, I'm sure Dowly has some brilliant suggestions for a name. :DL

He wants Subsim Seamen Samples. I didn't want to force poeple into it, so I said he was in charge of naming. He refuses to pick.

It came with Darkest Hour and Mare Nostum.

It came with Darkest Hour and Mare Nostum.

Those are free mods for RO ;)

For another cheap tactical game you guys may want to check out the Insurgency Mod for HL2 engine. Many of the original development team are the same guys that started Red Orchestra. The play feels alot like RO did before the addition of vehicles, and of course is set in the modern Middle East. (the teams are US Marines vs "Insurgents")

It is definitely more "pick up and go" then Arma, but still has a good tactical shooter feel to it.

Oberon
09-04-10, 05:12 PM
I concur, it's been a while since I've played insurgency although it is a nice game, I didn't know it was done by the same guys as RO, but it makes sense, it's got that feel to it. I recall playing as the Insurgents and facing up against a two man US sniper team, they were good...but they were using the in game speak to communicate, I approached and dropped behind a wall, and then threw a smoke grenade at them. "Hey, where did he go?!" suddenly come over the chat "I can't see a damn thing now!"
Unfortunately as I ran towards them to give them a taste of AK...the smoke dispersed.... :dead:

Weiss Pinguin

What are the system reqs for insurgency? I guess my old FX 5200 would be pretty sorely taxed?

Highbury

I didn't know it was done by the same guys as RO

Not the whole team, some of the same people. The Lead on RO left to start Insurgency, some went with him and I know of at least one that went to work on America's Army. With both games though, I doubt there are any of the original guys left.

@Pinguin, I would guess the requirements are the same as HL2 since it is just a mod for it. Mods can tend to be a bit more FPS heavy then the base game though.

System requirements
Minimum:
1.7 GHz processor,
512 MB RAM,
128MB Video card,
20GB available Hard drive space,
DirectX 8 level graphics card,
Windows 2000/XP/Vista,
Internet connection

Well, the problem with COD4 is that it takes what was silly in Counter-Strike and adds a whole lotta quake deathmatch to it. Many don't like games where you can win by learning to jump and shoot at the same time or learn a spot in the map from where you can toss a grenade over 3 story building to an hotspot. :88)

True, but I used to play more clan/tounament matches that did not allow rubbish such as "bunny hopping". Made for more interesting matches.

Ok don't flame me

I'd suggest the community to give DWX 1.2 a try

http://www.redrodgers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4912

Just need to download part 1 to part 4 and nothing else.

It adds many many playable platform with one or two with custom interfaces. It's really cool especially if Multi player comes to mind. I haven't tested how MP feels like with it though so I'm not aware if there are issues with it and MP session.

Of course there's always the reliable LWAMI :salute:

I haven't put much time into DWX 1.2 but I can tell so far it seems to be clear of bugs and I haven't noticed anything which I would consider a bug or a glitch.

That Type 214 or Type 212 or that Collins class or driving that British Trafalgar or the exotic Victor II or Victor III or Lada or hunting a player Delta IV SSBN or a player Typhoon...umm the possibilities are endless ;). I do not know how stable it is for multi player but I think it's worth a try considering the effort and quality that has gone into making this mod.

No more silly passive AI either, be prepare to get counterattack when you launch a missile or torpedoes. :dead:

Had a tank only battle on MoW the other night, the tank that did the best out of all of the tanks I spawned (right up to the Tiger II) was a little Panzer IV which sat by a tree and banged away at anything that came near it.

I remember playing a very large game back during the beta (Think it was 8v8); at one point I was reduced to a single armoured car which I salvaged and repaired from the Germans (IIRC a Puma). This lone armoured car then proceeded to rampage across the field, mowing down everything in its path before being knocked out by a squad of German infantry hiding in the woods.

That was quite a sight.

Maybe a little outdated by the graphical standards of some of the new fps titles out there, but COD2 with the Tactical Realism server mod is actually very good - in real terms this means a dearth of cheating spray and pray n00bs. Also, as it's a well established multiplayer game, there's loads of maps to play on.
There's other games that look better, flashier and have more 'unlockable' weapon classes than you can shake a stick at, but the online gameplay aspect is pretty darn solid.

British armour vs. Soviet armour:

And when in doubt - heavy artillery, open fire!

I need to get better at managing my infantry, often they've been shot to death simply because I told them to go to the wrong place or forgot to tell them to stop and shoot the enemy.

EDIT: What are those grey-tipped shells, BTW?

Oberon
09-11-10, 01:48 PM
AP rounds...of some sort...possibly an APCNR or APCBCT :hmmm: Can't remember off hand. Either which way it's about as useful against Soviet armour as a hammer against a nuclear detonation.

Raptor1

Don't the British get any sort of tank destroyer or at least a tank with a sufficiently large gun?

Oberon
09-11-10, 03:12 PM
The Centurion is a pretty nice piece of kit and the Firefly hits hard...but it would seem that the best bit of Brit AT armour is the Tortoise.

http://mailer.fsu.edu/%7Eakirk/tanks/GreatBritain/GB-HeavyAssaultTank-Tortoise-A39.jpg

Arclight
09-11-10, 03:26 PM
You can acces a page/pop-up with all the armour values on all sides and parts(front turret, side hull, etc), and penetration values of the gun at different ranges.

Pays to have a look through there and get the details on all the tanks. Russians have 4 or 5 different KV-1 tanks, but only 1 is really usefull (in an AT role).

* sure I don't have to point it out, but armour facing is critical in tank-on-tank fight. Dont "kinda" flank either; get a good straight-on hit on side or rear, or it may well glance off. I remember Lion having a big tank-hunter which I couldn't take on from the front. So I send a jeep as a distraction, and put a shell through the side as he turned to engage. :D

Damn TF, those were some good RO games :yeah:

First match at Berlin, we were slaughtered initially but in the second round we rally around and pushed forward to the second to last objective. Eventually German reinforcements ran out and I was able to lead a bayonet charge and I didn't stop until I got to the steps of the Reichstag.

Second map was Leningrad, first round we were pushed back to the bridge but held it to the sounds of AC/DC, Tom Jones and Michael Jackson (as you do) and copious amounts of smoke plus some more smoke.
Second round we held the first objective the whole round, a heavy part of the fighting took place in the sewers where we were eventually overwhelmed despite some superb MG defending, however the Germans were unable to push through above ground and lost the round.

Third map was something unpronounceable beginning with B. However, this had trenches!! Was getting constantly killed until I Alt Tabbed out of RO and booted up WMP with 'The Price of a Mile' on...and then dammit, I went forward and we held, and we held to the end of the first round.
The second round started well, but we were flanked on the left and it went downhill from there, which was a shame because I liked that trench map, it goes well with my bayonet.

What with the artillery pasting the ground in front of us, taking potshots at approaching coal scuttle helmets, bayonet at the ready...it all felt very 1917.

As WWII shooters go, it's about as realistic as you can get I'd say. The tank armour is a bit screwy IMHO but when the things in a match slot together, you can get one hell of an experience. Hunter was telling me the other day about a map with a section of open ground, the Russians were trying to cross it but were getting slaughtered, so one guy over the mike organises them to wait behind the slope which provides the cover before the open ground and then on his signal they all advanced, tanks included. All that was missing apparently was the commissar with the Soviet flag (not in game sadly ) although I pointed out to Hunter that any commissar would be behind the lines with an MG waiting for anyone who turned around.

Needless to say, the charge was mown down...but it was the experience, and sometimes the charge is the straw that breaks the line and being at the head of that charge...well, it's quite something alright! :yeah: Admittedly it also makes you a prime target, but well, one more martyr for the Rodina/Vaterland (delete as appropriate).

Raptor1
09-12-10, 06:31 PM
If Hunter was referring to the game Task Force and I were in, the charge was not mowed down, it actually overran the frontline German positions before bogging down under heavy fire from Germans hiding in the woods and town. We managed to break through again eventually but the game ended before we got everything.

where you on the right flank of it? (the ones that went throught the forest) because the left including me who where behind the ridge to go in the open and jump from crate to crate charged and where mowed down before we got far.

as for RO, I've decided not to buy it...suffered 2 complete system freezes and I don't think that's a good thing of a game to do.

Ah, yes, I was supporting the right flank with my anti-tank rifle. That charge went through and captured the first German position in the woods. After that we crawled from one foxhole to another for a while until we could storm the hill the Germans were holding, not quite sure how the left flank fared at this point.

Beats me, I can live with games that have a random crash or critical error back to desktop once in a while...but a complete system freeze where the sound goes loopy and I'm forced to reset the computer....I hate that.:nope:

I've googled the problem, but it can be caused by a dozen things
DX9 (have the game run on DX8 throught a config file)
Bloom, motion blur, AA, change this change that...use earlier drivers, disable this enable that.
and ofcourse the answers beeing so confusing as it is with the guy actually saying ''I can't guarantee it'll work''

So here's my theory why it freezes, the planets formation cause a galatic radiation wave that causes unexplainable charges that hits the earth and awakens long dormant demons in Hell which causes some crazy mountain villagers to sacrifice black mountain goats in huge numbers that results in their mountain god creating a huge rockslides into the ocean causing the ocean's current to change and having a impact on the earths climate causing my god damn Red Orchestra to freeze my system.

Well did a quick tune up (the options on my graphics card weren't set for some reason) and hopped back online, this time on a map without half as many trees. Played a lot smoother, but I still lagged enough to be almost useless  This is why I like consoles - no messing with hardware, and everything's calibrated to what's on the system, which is the same stuff everyone else has... After reading this thread I decided to get RO yesterday, and I've been having a blast. Literally in many cases, as grenades, tank shells, and everything else explosive lands on my head.

I find some of the maps a little annoying, where you're meant to defend a point, but spawn just as far away as the attackers.

Other than that, I've enjoyed it. I think I've done best when playing as a basic rifleman and sitting back in some cover.

Does anyone know if you can shoot tank drivers through their vision slits?

*cough* *hack*

Right tactical gaming... erm, well this thing, that is STAB, really formed as an off-shoot of SSC. An attempt to branch out from Arma really.

But to be honest, other than Arma neither the people I play with or myself really played much beyond that. We've been messing around a bit though: for example, Dowly, Lion and me played through the Rainbow Six 3 campaign. Good fun. More recently, Dowly and me picked up R6 Vegas.

I know, Vegas, not really R6, right? At least, that's how I thought about it untill I gave it a spin. It's quite challenging, with a pretty darn solid cover system. Set the thing to 'realistic' and you'll quickly learn that getting caught off guard is punished rather severely. So much so in fact that we went from no respawns to 3 lives (minimum setting) to make it a bit less frustrating.

Oh don't give me that look. Yeah, it's rewarding if you can manage it without that 'help', but replaying a level 20 times when you're just trying to get into the game can be a bit much. Rather get some experience first than go off the hardcore end and splatter your brains against a wall over and over.

Anyway, what I'm trying to get at is that we/I really had tactical FPS games in mind. Something like DW is great but getting people together to actually play it... Also, with FPS games there's actually a larger, more varied selection to get into. It's all room clearing and flashbangs at the end of the day, but each game does it a little differently and offers something different in terms of levels and gear.

So, what does it come down to then? We'd really like to get more players involved into games that are currently either already owned or easy to obtain;

Rainbow Six 3 and it's expansions.
Ghost Recon and it's expansions.
Rainbow Six Vegas 1&2
SWAT 3&4

Just suggestions those, if we do manage to get people for something like DW I'm all for it. More suggestions are welcome.

Just wanted to see if we can open up a discussion for it: do we want to pick fixed times, maybe organise things ad hoc, what exactly to play etc.

For the moment Dowly and me have been getting stuck into the first Vegas game. The missions are 4 players max, so consider this an open invitation. In case you have doubts, the sneaky ferret recorded a bit of our escapades (http://www.youtube.com/user/Dowly).

Having 3 or 4 players instead of just 2 really increases the odds of success rather drastically. Always try to keep us from getting shot in the back, but sometimes enemies just come from too many directions to effectively cover with 2 guys.

Especially true for the terrorist hunts. Quite easy to get overwhelmed.

I'm up for it, of course.

You can get the range by right clicking on a unit to get the info, or going to the game's unit encyclopedia and looking through the stats. Each hex is 50 meters, so you can get a rough idea from that.

Our problem was not lack range, the hideously murderous tank battle with the Chaffee platoon was fought at literally point blank. We couldn't shoot them from farther away, because they were in some really inconvenient terrain that blocked the view (Damn those Vietnamese!). Infantry would have been useful there, but ours was incompetent and began fleeing as soon as they got shot a couple of times.

Yes the terrain on that map was pretty terrible. It's a pity I lost my scout car to those Wolverines, their flank was terribly weak, I could have captured most of those victory locations in a blitzkrieg move.

Ah, good games overall. Here's what I thought:

The assault on the Dutch went off pretty well; their positions were good, but they had too little forces and no heavy weapons to hold the line with. Oberon's attack on the south was a little undermanned and stalled for a bit, but when the north collapsed it was over for them.

The US/Vie...err...Soviet night battle went...erm...about as well as one would expect something like that to go. Within minutes the field was littered with smoke, fire, burning hulks, destroyed buildings (courtesy of Task Force's half-tracks) and other assorted messes (and crickets! Damn them!). I'm actually rather impressed by the death trap defence-in-depth the AI set us up for there, must have been terrifying for some of those road columns rolling along in the middle of the night and suddenly having molotov cocktails thrown on top of them by concealed infantry and coming under field gun fire from all sides. :shifty:

As for the lag later in the game, Steam apparently decided that was the best time to download the new Assault Squad patch (which hasn't been officially released yet!), so that's the likely explanation for that.

Oberon
07-19-11, 07:04 AM
I still reckon it was cricket based sabotage. They must have also caused my Calliope to commit suicide. It's got nothing to do with the fact that I thought that I had selected the jeep and sent it off to scout but in fact I still had the Calliope selected... :damn:

Yeah, my advance in the south against the Dutch ran into trouble because they had put their fortifications just out of range of Leo Kessler and his MG on the hill...so I had to pull him forward, and all that did was bring him under fire and make him have a nervous breakdown, and write several novels.
However once the Panzer IIs and the Armoured cars got behind the fortified lines it was all over. :yep:

T'was a good game, even with the Haxing Matildas. I expected you to use your tanks more in the north than in the south and so I had about three or four AT guns in the forest to the north along with a couple of 25 pounders and mortars...and some big old artillery piece that I think fired that shot that wound up on the other side of the map...somehow.

The south was lightly defended, although it was going to be the point that I would start my counterattack after I'd beaten back your initial wave, hence why those trucks were down there, they were going to follow the Matildas with infantry and such and then dismount and advance.

The best laid plans, as they say...

So when your Chars rolled in in force to the south, I had to divert some of the Matildas in the center to the south to help cover that section because the Matildas were about the only thing between you and the town behind my lines which had a token force of a couple of AT riflemen in it. Of course, fog of war and all that. I think you twigged that the center was held strongly quite early because two of your Chars halted and dug in on the hill opposite the road through the woods, so I wasn't expecting too much trouble there...but the south was trouble...if those Matildas hadn't have had such thick armour, I would have been up a familiar creek without a rowing implement.

Raptor1
07-21-11, 08:00 AM
That hill you had there with the artillery was really inconvenient. I tried moving spotters around to try to fire my heavy guns at it, but I was too preoccupied with the tank battle to the south to ever really effectively manage it. I think the turn time should be extended, if not turned off completely next time we do something like that.

I wonder if the Char B1 bis would have had better performance against those Matildas, since it has significantly more armour and a better gun. I wanted to get those, but they were unavailable so I had to grab the standard variant. Though that still wouldn't have saved my forces from the general incompetence that plagued them, especially with regards to OpFire.

Oberon
07-21-11, 08:35 AM
When did the Bis come into service then? I thought it came in about the same time as the Matilda II? :hmmm:

Raptor1

Oberon
07-21-11, 09:13 AM
Ouch. Unlucky, they probably would have been more of an equal footing against the Matildas.

How many FT-17s did you have anyway? There seemed to be an endless supply of them trundling across that open field.

Raptor1
07-21-11, 10:29 AM
A lot, something like a reinforced Company. They were quite cheap and I figured they'd make good infantry support, but in the end they were mostly worthless. Probably should used those points to get some more artillery or AT guns.

Yea, i kinda messed up on the last day. i didn't try hard enough to capture Sollum. Kinda was concerned that Oberon was going to pull another trick like he did on the second day where he started pulling back, and then started a attack. Was concerned he would do this again. But I kinda didnt get how badly things where going for the allies logistical.

Fixed. :shifty:

They're going to have my incompetence taught in military academies for all of eternity as an example of how not to conduct logistics...

The end of the Ariete Regiment

Division, I think. Though if things continue to go the way they do there might not be more than a Regiment left of it soon.

Doesn't look like a good start for the Axis, but we'll see how it goes...
