...and have Turner Classic Movies, turn it on today!

Sadly, you've already missed My Favorite Year. But, now showing: Becket.

Still to come:

The Last Emperor
Lord Jim
Lawrence Of Arabia
The Ruling Class
The Stunt Man

The Ruling Class is not among my favorites (although TBH I've only seen it once and that was ages ago). Never seen The Stunt Man but I've heard very good things about it. Not sure if I'm willing to stay up all night for it, though.

Nevertheless, my day is pretty much accounted for, lol. Also: LAWRENCE OF FREAKING ARABIA! I really need to get that on DVD. Absolutely made of win.

Now why haven't TCM UK done this? :damn:

Absolutely love Peter O'Toole films. Got my Dad to thank for that. :DL

Don't know about the UK, but over here in August every day on TCM is devoted to one person. So today it's all films featuring Peter O'Toole.

Why they're not showing The Lion In Winter, I can't imagine. Maybe they used it for someone else's "day" and I've missed it. I need to get that one on DVD as well.

Honestly, I think I would watch Peter O'Toole sit in a chair and read the phone book out loud. Possibly because you know at some point he'd look at a name and then say, "I knew a fellow named 'X' once..." and then he'd tell some awesome and hilarious story about it.

Yeah. I first saw that on tv as a kid. Strangely I have only seen it once since but I remember it for the Mcgyver style repairs he did on the sea-plane.

The Stunt Man: one of my all-time favorites. Steve Railsbeck is a wanted fugitive who takes refuge with a crazy director (O'Toole) who he's sure is trying to kill him. Both of them (and Barbara Hershey as well) are at the top of their game.

When it gets to the part where we finally find out what Railsbeck's heinous crime was, you'll wet yourself.

Well, somebody will, anyway.

Sounds like I need to add another flick to my Netflix queue. Provided I don't end up sitting up all night to watch it.

Becket is spinning up on my hard drive, guess I'm not going to bed after all :DL

Good story about Peter O'Toole getting drunk with a friend in a pub in London, and he said, "Let's go and see a play." At one point O'Toole nudged his friend and said, "This is brilliant. This is the bit - where I come on. Oh, bollocks!"

Classic.

There's a little "mini-film" they run sometimes as filler on TCM that is bits of an interview with him and clips of some of his films. At the end he says that once he had sent a bedraggled leather jacket to a cleaners, one that (O'Toole being O'Toole) had suffered all manner of indignities in the way of blood, booze, and heaven knows what else getting splashed or spilled on it. The cleaners did the best they could but returned the jacket with a note pinned to it that read, "It distresses us to return work that is not perfect."

He said he figured that would "just about do" for him as well, and they could put it on his tombstone.

Better than up all night for a Planet of the Apes marathon. You need Pepto-bismol after that one.

Ooh! Ooh! Forgot another 'small' favorite (there are so many):
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0084370/

Based loosely on Mel Brooks's early days as a TV writer. Mark Linn-Baker is not Mel Brooks, Peter O'Toole is not Errol Flynn, and Joseph Bologna is not Sid Caesar. Wonderful.

You know every time I watch Lawrence of Arabia - well, one tends to associate it with O'Toole for obvious reasons - but I'm always struck by how pitch perfect everyone is in this film. So so SO many great performances.

And for some reason I used to always forget that Claude Rains was in this until he actually came onscreen but my goodness, isn't he just delightful? He's always delightful. A few years back I finally noticed how he completely steals every scene of Casablanca that he's in. To be fair he got a lot of the really great lines, but still.

Lawrence of Arabia is one of my favorite movies, not least of which because it was filmed on location. I have the DVD, but also saw it on the big screen in the late 80s when the restored print was released. On the big screen, the desert scenes, especially the one where Lawrence meets sherif Ali at the water well are amazing.

I love jack hawkins in that one. He was perfect as general Allenby who always finds a way to re-motivate Lawrence and send him back out.

Darn! We'll be out most of the day so I'm going to miss a lot of it unfortunately. I got to agree with you Frau Kaleun. Peter O'Toole is one of my favorites. I don't know if you have seen the mini-series "Masada" but thats probably my favorite. Just brilliant performances from him and Peter Strauss.

I caught a bit of Lord Jim, and stayed for the entire Lawrence. Good stuff. And yes, 'Lion in Winter' was part of the Kate Hepburn movie day.

He's so good I have to keep reminding myself that he's Jack Hawkins even though I know that's who it is. If that makes any sense. And it really is a marvelous character.

I remember seeing this Letterman show in 1995(?) when he was doing his show in London for a week.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K561m7Nq7kk&feature=related

Peter O'Toole was on one night. His story about the camel charge near the end of Lawrence of Arabia is hilarious. It starts at about 3:30 in the video but the whole clip is pretty funny, starting out with O'Toole riding in on a camel. :haha:

Ah, the epic of all time. I have watched my "Lawrence of Arabia" DVD at least annually -- and attended theatrical screenings whenever they occur here. The best way to see it is in a grand old cinema with one gigantic screen.

The film has inspired generations of scholars to learn more about the real T.E. Lawrence, a fascinating & "complicated" man. I've written a screenplay about his later life in the RAF -- that's what I'm trying to sell in the UK now (instead of writing U-boat stories).

The tricky part: who nowadays could play Lawrence (at age 40) even half as well as O'Toole did in 1960? Hugh Laurie, perhaps?

Ralph Fiennes played him in 1992 for a TV-film called "A Dangerous Man: Lawrence After Arabia" -- with TEL & Feisal in Paris for the Versailles Conference. Well worth seeing on DVD.

Actually, re T.E. Lawrence's sexuality, the old "gay theory" that was bandied about in the 1950s (and which surely influenced O'Toole's portrayal) has been discredited since then. The truth, to the extent it can be determined, is considerably more complicated than I can go into here.

Suffice it to say that a certain type of individual, due to a variety of experiences, will eventually give up on the whole idea of mating with anyone. Lawrence couldn't even bear to shake hands, and was thought by his own brother to be a virgin his entire life. I have known people like that, and they can be extraordinary (and messed-up at the same time).

Celebacy is not wrong for some people.

My reference was to O'toole, who is gay, although too old to practice, and has a modicome of self control, which keeps him out of the gay pride BS.

Come to think of it, today may have been "Charlton Heston Day" because they ran Midway this afternoon. Earlier they ran In Harm's Way - is he in that? I didn't watch any of their programming today because I was occupied *cough* Project Runway marathon *cough* with other things.

I wonder who both movies have in common. It's surely not John Wayne... Henry Fonda? Could've been one of the "lesser" players I guess.

Anyway - I tried to watch Midway once but I couldn't get through it. And as I've said before, if they want to make a movie about the PTO and have me root for our side, they really shouldn't put Toshiro Mifune in charge of the Japanese navy. :O:
