Hello everyone, I am very new at this game, but seem to get the hang of things. I can barely beat the single mission u505.
Anyway I have questions about a problem im having and a few about the game as well.
Problem- The game worked fine then I had to uninstall it, after re-installing it - it crashes! I have windows 7 and it seems to be a problem with ntdll.dll , it never happened before! All i did was re-install!
Game questions - How the hell do you complete a patrol mission!? Once I do a patrol my orders say both complete, but when I go back to the dock, nothing happens! I have to save then exit then I get another patrol, is this normal? I thought it would say mission complete or something.
How do you attack from underwater? If im below perascope depth how can I lock a target to fire a torpedo?
Thanks in advance

Yep you have to actually exit the patrol, there is no mission complete screen because a patrol can last as long as you want it to last.

Stay at periscope depth, and since your new simply use the weapon officer to get a firing solution then hit the fire button. However hit the Q button to open the tube before getting the solution. The extra seconds needed to open the tube can mess the solution up. You cannot lock on a target below periscope depth and once you get below 25 meters you really cant shoot anyways. However you can use the hydrophone to get a ship's location on the map.

Welcome aboard! :sunny:
I can't help with the Windows 7 problem, as I don't have it. Yet. In another couple of weeks I should have a whole new system.
As for docking, in the Esc screen you should see the option 'Dock At XXX'. This will end the patrol.

Thank you for that information, I was really unclear about that.
And anyone that can help with this problem is greatly appreciated.

Dont need to do that. I fixed this by changing the compatibility from win98 to winxp sp3 and it worked fine.
Now, I want the U-Boat patch that I already have. Last time I did this is rendered my last working copy to nothing and had to re-install....
-EDIT
After installing the U-Boats mod: the game crashes on loading screen saying simdata.dll - So I replaced it with one I had from the original install, and now it wont even launch. I get this error:
This application can be launched with a release version of Miscrosoft Windows 95 OSR2.1/98/ME/NT 4.0/2000/XP/Server 2003 only.
(yes it really says miscrosoft)
Maybe this thread might help.

i joined here yesterday so i am a noob as well hehe!:) i have been playing the SH3 for a month.

while you are underwater use "page up" on keyboard until you can see through the surface of the sea.then on the right side of your pannel there must be lock and fire buttons.first lock on to your target then fire.there you go,if you are lucky you gonna hit the target ship! :)
btw i hope one day we can use manuel TDC with the help of Captains on this forum.:DL

If the game is a recent purchase it doesn't have StarForce on it.
Now, I want the U-Boat patch that I already have.
After installing the U-Boats mod:
What U-Boat patch/mod are you talking about? I know of no patch or mod for SH3 by that name.

I was kinda wondering about that myself, all I could think of was the u-boat add-on for SH4. :06:

Its called U-Boat: Battle in the Mediterranean
This error I get with the addon is Starfoce isnt it? But I cannot find it in my hidden devices and the removal tool said It couldn't find it either.

I believe this may be the "add-on" referred to here:

Looks like it caused quite a bit of contention due to issues of other people's work being stolen and sold by a third party as an expansion for SH3... consensus seems to be that you're better off avoiding it and using one of the free supermods available here if you want to expand or enhance the stock game.
and good hunting on your mission, :salute:

From the manual:
Stock Silent Hunter III allows players to join a historical U-boat flotilla during their migration from Germany to Occupied France, the Mediterranean, and the Pacific, and the final retreat to Germany and Norway as the Allies close in. GWX adds several historical flotillas and theaters of operation:
The 10th Flotilla in the Indian Ocean
The 13th Flotilla in Norway
The 23rd Flotilla in Greece
The 30th Flotilla in the Black Sea
GWX also augments the operational activity of two flotillas in areas where they operated historically:
Patrols by the 11th Flotilla around Britain
Patrols by the 12th Flotilla in the South Atlantic
GWX U-boat Flotillas, locations, and default U-boat types for new careers (availability of type will depend on in-game date):

Thanks again, you guys are great. I wanted to play the U-Boat addon but if its not supported then I wont play it.
There is another add-on called - Seawolves: Submarines on Hunt
Do you guys support this? Or does it also include stolen work?
Thanks

Captain J. Borne

I mean the U-Boat mod was not supported here because some of the work was stolen from what I understand.
I was wondering if this other add-on is the same story.
and it gives a character and an effect which must be experienced, but I guess you already know this, and want something even better, but you have the opportunity to add different mods to GWX which may be an even better experience, you decide, good luck!

AFAIK there has never been an official add-on for SH3.
There's the stock game + patches put out by Ubisoft, and that's it as far as official, licensed product which can be legally sold for profit by those who have the right to do so. (Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.)
Anything else would fall under the category of an unofficial mod, and there are plenty of those available for free without giving money to a third party who may already be on shaky legal ground even if they didn't steal what they're selling from someone else who did the work for fun and not for profit.
Regarding Submarines On Hunt, see here:

Exactly the answer I was looking for. Thank you. I will just use GWX3.0 - I played 1 new mission and I love it!
The mission was to patrol grid OST - And i couldn't find any OST grid on my map!! But I love the port dock shown on the map, really helpful!
Anyone know where grid OST is? LOL
frau kaleun
08-26-10, 03:07 PM
Patrol grids are usually indicated by a two-letter, two-number combination... BE11, AN32, etc. Coordinates that are "off the grid" shown on the nav map in the game are given in latitude/longitude IIRC.
I got no clue on what "OST" might refer to, other than being German for "EAST"... do you remember which mission you selected?
CherryHarbey

Is it not the eastern half of the Black Sea??
frau kaleun
08-26-10, 03:27 PM
That's the Ostsee, I think, in German. Actually though I think that's the Baltic(?).
I've just never encountered mission orders that give a patrol grid of "OST" - it's always been an actual square on the grid.
But then I haven't played a single mission in ages and never have played most of them, which is why I wondered which mission it was.

I think that OST region indeed refers to the East part of the Black Sea. (North of Turkey) Knowing which Flotilla he joined should solve this puzzle.

Yea im in second mission on carreers and on this patrol it tells me to go to grid: INDOZN - And im based near the Indonesian Ozean but I went there and it still said incomplete.
This is GWX3.0 - 2nd patrol, based at Jakarta

Yea im in second mission on carreers
Just to clarify: do you mean you have selected another single mission to play, or that you're on the second patrol of a career? Because "mission" usually refers to playing in single mission mode, and "career" usually refers to playing a series of patrols in career mode.

Okay, thanks.
I haven't played outside the Atlantic but it sounds like maybe in those other operational areas patrol assignments are given via some kind of geographical abbreviation - OST = East, INDOZN = Indonesia, etc.
Someone who has played those areas can surely confirm this? Good thing to know in case I ever end up out there myself.
Captain J. Borne

I went everywhere that has a IND or OZN in it. Still says incomplete.

Now that I can't explain, because I do know that once I've completed my 24 hours in my assigned patrol area, it shows my "mission" as "Complete" if I go into the Mission Orders screen. So if those areas work like the Atlantic, either you're not spending the required time in the designated area (whatever that is) or something else is going on. And I wouldn't think the designated area would be that hard to figure out.
Aha, the manual says that patrol grid "INDOZN" is the Indischer Ozean (Indian Ocean).
Aaaaand... yep. That's what I thought. From the GWX manual:
Players must enable the GWX Indian Ocean Campaign Files Only option before starting a patrol from Penang, Jakarta, or any other Asian U-boat base if the player intends to end the patrol in Asian waters, as this option includes a workaround that allows players to win renown by patrolling their assigned Indian Ocean or Pacific Ocean patrol area. Players should disable this option just before starting a mission where they intend to travel to Europe.
And if you're playing in the 30th Flotilla in the Black Sea, you need to enable the GWX Black Sea Campaign Files Only option, for the same reasons. Otherwise it sounds like you don't get the workaround that makes the game recognize your completed assignment.
Both of these options are mods that come with your GWX install, and you can enable and disable them as needed using JSGME - which also comes with your GWX install.
Captain J. Borne
08-26-10, 10:42 PM
Ok, I will play with that to see if I can get it to work, because I have been in the indian ocean for a long time both say incomplete.
Remember that you cannot change between these campaign area mods while you are on patrol. If you need to enable a different one then you have to cancel your current patrol. Changing such files must be done while still in port. So either you finish this patrol and accept you didn't fulfill those orders, or you go back to an earlier savegame being in port.

Happy hunting!
Thank you for clearing that up. Thank you all for your support. To be more accurate, for example if you change between atlantic/mediteranean to asia bases, you first need to switch to the merged campaign while in port. Once you reach the new base and end your patrol there, then you can switch to the local area campaign mod. And start doing those regular patrols. I presume you started your campaign from Jakarta, then there wasn't any transit patrol involved.
