For WWII, Battle of the River Plate and Tora! Tora! Tora! are both great (And the latter might be my favourite war film too).

Reckon not. I suppose every month requires a new movie thread...

Don't think there's anything wrong with adding more opinions on top of the ones in the older thread...

A good point, but it means that the same recommendations are getting made over and over.

The 'Bedford Incident' is a very good, tension filled, film about a US destroyer and a Soviet submarine above the Arctic Circle during the cold war.

peal harbour (2001) I can't believe no one caught this.:o I wouldn't say Pearl Harbor is a Naval movie. It has some naval forces in it but the focus is more on the love story I'd say.:nope:

Crimson Tide and Pearl Harbor are two of the worst 'naval' movies ever made.I've seen Crimson Tide twice; once before I joined the navy, and once after I got to my boat. Needless to say after the second time I'm still trying to figure out where the "bilge bay" is at. Not to mention all those cool secret passages under the deck plates.

For those who's interests lean towards rum, buggery and the lash there are:
Captain Horatio Hornblower, RN with Gregory Peck;
Damn the Defiant with Alec Guinness; and
Billy Budd with Robert Taylor.
All classic storys, beautifully filmed and totally lacking in CGI special effects.

Thought Master and Commander was not too bad a flick while keeping to the period quite nicely in the details. It did not do too much violence to the book upon which it was based.
As for Mutiny on the Bounty, we have the 1935 version with Charles Laughton and Clark Gable, the horribly bad (IMHO) Brando film of 1962 and The Bounty with Anthony Hopkins and Mel Gibson.
Some other versions of the story out there as well.

I was always amused at the underwater 'Radar' screen in Crimson Tide.

Really? I always thought it was visual device to give the audience a degree of situational awareness. Cool and thanks!

Has anybody mentioned Mutiny On The Bounty yet?
Which version?
1935 (Charles Laughton, Clark Gable): Good, but goes with the traditional 'Bligh-as-monster' scenario.
1962 (Trevor Howard, Marlon Brando): Very good, well worth seeing.
1984 (The Bounty)(Anthony Hopkins, Mel Gibson): My personal favorite. It makes Bligh a real person, and covers his epic 47-day 3600-mile (6700-km) voyage with 18 men in a 23-foot boat, navigating only with a sextant and a watch. It also covers his court-martial. Far and away the best, in my opinion.
I admit I haven't seen the 1916 version.

1962 (Trevor Howard, Marlon Brando): Very good, well worth seeing.
This would be my pick, but more due to the fact that I like just about anything with Brando.

I've seen all of 'em too. I did really like Anthony Hopkins as Bligh, and it was definitely a more even-handed portrayal. And having the extra part of the story included was nice since I was familiar with what happened afterwards.
I think I've only seen the Brando version once, liked it well enough as far as recall... and I do like Brando, although it wouldn't be my favorite work of his.
But I have to say, it's really hard to top Clark Gable in the original. Because, you know, it's Clark Gable. *sigh*

But I LOVE DAS BOOT..
u571 has the special effects and not the "cheezy weird acting" that many older movies had (including Das boot)
Das boot is in a league of its own.. But I like newer films.. Obvious effects make it seem much more real to me!

U-571 is a good movie if you are an action movie fan. If you like submarines and naval history at all, it is a travesty from first frame to last. It's like SH5 - lots of lovely effects coupled with almost nothing else worth mentioning. It's a joke, period.

"The Sand Pebbles" is another great (but often forgotten) naval movie on an epic scale, set on a US Gunboat in China with a great cast including Steve McQueen, Richard Crenna & a very hot Candice Bergen in her first role.
also good & rarely mentioned
"San Demetrio London" the story of a crippled tanker's journey home through a U-Boat filled Atlantic Ocean.
In terms of what's coming up the BBC are just about to air a 2 part 3+ hour drama on the sinking of the Laconia it looks great check out the blurb here (http://www.bbc.co.uk/tv/comingup/sinkingofthelaconia/)

While I agree that it was a fantastic movie, one of my favorites, I have to disagree about how it treated the book, or books. That movie was made of alot of little pieces from many of the Aubrey/Maturin books which I thought was bad form if they wanted to do a sequel. Even the title was a mix of the first and 10th books. He was a Captain in the books (and movie) by the time of this main story, not a Master and Commander, Maturin never once wore his famous wigs.. etc etc....
However, the worst affront to the writing was they completely changed the nationality of the protagonist. (In the book they were after an American privateer, not a French one.. I guess they figured a French enemy would sell better in the US market :O:) When you have a movie that is about 2 warships, and you change the country where one is from, I call that a massive change from the literature.

One I haven't seen posted on SubSim but, by me :DL
Operation Bikini. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Bikini
The film takes place aboard an American submarine (http://www.subsim.com/wiki/Submarine) in the Pacific during World War II (http://www.subsim.com/wiki/World_War_II). The sub's commander (Brady) is ordered to stop and pick up an underwater demolition team (http://www.subsim.com/wiki/Underwater_demolition_team) led by Lt. Hayes (Hunter), whose mission is to locate and destroy a U.S. submarine sunken in a lagoon off Bikini Atoll (http://www.subsim.com/wiki/Bikini_Atoll) before the Japanese are able to raise it and capture the advanced radar (http://www.subsim.com/wiki/Radar) system on board.
