Hi, i just installed SH4 on my new pc (my old one lagged like ****). My question, is how to edit map markings like it says you can do in the manual? If you use the pencil to mark the last known position of a contact, how do you change the name to say something like "ship last spotted here?"

That "feature" made the manual but it never made it into the game. The manual is not very accurate or useful. All of the major game mods have better ones.

I'm afraid the manual has totally lied to you.

I really wish this feature did make it in to the game. Placing marks without being able to automatically record the time stynks

Has anyone made a mod what does allow some data to be entered in the map?

As a work around I keep a pad next to me. Probably more realistic but a pain.

....cracks that as a mod they would be eligible IMHO for sainthood. If only it could show the 'X' and the time then that would still be a serious improvement.

Unfortunately Platapus there is nothing yet (hope springs eternal), that permits data to be entered on the map. Apparently there are similar issues with the "other" pencil.

I can honestly say I didn't look once at the manual. I learned about the game and how to play it on this superb forum.

Welcome aboard.:salute:

Seriously, if you make a couple of marks then save a game and then open the .map file of it, then you should find the map marks easily. SH3Gen did the same with SH3 savegames. It used marks and circles on the map to display intelligence data. Unfortunately you have to save, edit and then reload.

There was a work of fantasy included with my CD and a PDF copy with the downloaded expansion pack. They called it a manual but I never found it of any help. It doesn't even list all the controls available for the subs, some of which are very useful. I thought a manual was supposed to help you but this one only confused me.

My manual for Silent Service 2 was more helpful for learning how to operate a sub and giving details of the Pacific war to help find targets.

Sadly, I recall the SSII manual not being quite up to the quality of the original Silent Service manual.
