We had something similar when I was in basic (30 years ago). You had a choice whether to attend church or not. If you choose not to attend, you cleaned latrines. Most of us decided to attend and just think of other stuff.

It was not right, but evidently it has been going on for a while.

Same here. Only I went to basic 18 years ago. (wow, it's been that long?). Every sunday, you had a choice. It was either go to this non denominational christian service, or get put on some crappy detail and have some TI riding your ass.

I went to Youtube and looked up the band these guys were supposed to go listen to... after getting through the first 60 seconds or so of a couple of their "hits," I think I'd opt for latrine duty and call it a win. :O:

Reminds me of that part in Full Metal Jacket. Gotta love Lee Ermey.

When I went to basic 8 years ago we were given the same choice. I went once and didn't go after that. I don't recall being "punished" for my choice back then. That said, I hope this General's career is stopped where it is. But on the other hand it's often said that once you join, your constitution rights go out the window.

Very true. In fact, complaining about just that was a running joke at times. Someone I knew once poked fun at the oath of enlistment by changing the words around to reflect it. Wish I could remember the rewrite, it was pretty funny.

You're right. Most of that music is simply horrendous, even by popular music's standards.

When I took Basic Training they preferred that everyone to be restricted to the barracks and by claiming to need some religion they couldn't stop you from escaping their clutches without getting the Base Chaplain on their butts.

In fact free time during basic training used to be a very rare commodity. Apparently if this anonymous story is indeed true then nowadays it seems that trainees actually get their weekends off.

That's pretty much what I did too.

Pro-tip: non denominationals don't make you stand up, kneel or otherwise disturb your sleep.

'Course maybe it would have been better to stay at the barracks so I could claim to be oppressed like Ducimus and Platapus... :DL
