Patrol and reporting question

Greetings,

I have a question for the experts on this forum. During a patrol do you have to radio in and report sinkings to BdU in order to get credit for them? I was going through the GWX 3.0 manual last week and I seem to recall reading that HF/DF is modeled and can result in some unwelcome company in your patrol grid...

No you do not have to radio in to get credit for sinking ships. You really do not have to radio in at all but, most of us do every 3-4 days like the real captains did. You can make enemy ship contact reports, and if there is a airbase close enough, the Luftwaffe might show up and sink it.:03:

I wait until after I attack to radio in my patrol report. I reason that my attack on a convoy or lone merchantman has already been radioed in, so the Admiralty already know there is a U-boat in the area. Then I hightail it out of there; sometimes I will submerge and skulk away, but usually I will make a high speed surface run for a few hours. If it is daylight, or nighttime when the Allies have radar I will keep a very close watch on the skies.

I make it a point to radio everytime I make contact with the enemy. Just makes me feel better for some reason. :smug:

My personal rule is if I stumble upon an unreported convoy, I'll shadow it and send contact reports every few hours for a while before I start positioning myself for an attack.

If I intercept a previously reported convoy, I'll go ahead and attack, assuming another boat is already shadowing and I've been ordered into the attack.

I don't want the enemy to pick up my transmissions for purposes of locating me, so I'll send in a report every now and then, usually after sinking a few vessels and far away from them. Afterward, I change course and resume my patrol. I mostly do it for my own benefit, as it automatically totals the tonnage sunk in the report I send.

I noticed that you even get a "well done" reply from BdU when reporting a convoy for the first time.
Further reports after that don't show up on my message list, even if the convoy's position has changed. The BdU never answers those later reports as well. I continue to report them anyway.

I certainly don't consider myself an 'expert' but in response to the above the answer as already stated is 'no'.

You receive renown after you see the message "She's going down".

One of the potential benefits of reporting a convoy is the fact that should you be within visible/eyesight range when reporting said convoy, the game will throw an imaginary dice and dependent upon whether there are sea or air assets within range, you may receive unexpected help.

It cuts the same way for the convoy should they detect you so be very alert.

I guess once again I'm the odd man out. I write down my position, course, speed, and the weather in a personal log book every day at the same time, and send in a position report. All kaleuns were required to do this until 1943 (don't remember the exact date) when BdU figured out the Allies might be reading their mail. After that I send in one once every 2d6 days.
