Yeah, that does sound like a pickle to me. I thought Java wasn't given up by the Japanese until their formal surrender.

Actually they are not Dutch and American merchants they are the little known Java Sea Pirates. They nearly got taken out early in the war because they had to stop operating you see the japs took over all the ports that they used to visit to go on extended shore leaves aka "Booze Binges".But as the war progressed they began to operate again. The Java Sea Pirates heard that US Navy submarine sailors tended not to follow so strictly the US Navy's strict no alcohol aboard ships policy.Upon learning this and needing a good source of booze(Rice wine just would not cut it) the JSP decided to make their vessels look like allied shipping so that they would be able to get close to our subs so that they might board them and steal all booze found.
Needless to say this resulted in some pitched battles as the submariners where not willing to have their booze stolen by a bunch of dog-faced squally wag Java Sea Pirates.
An effective counter was discovered by an as yet un-named Chief of the Boat(some say his name was Chief of the Boat) who had the bright idea of bringing extra bottles of booze that where to be launched into the sea via the counters measures launcher this worked to great effect as an entire boatload of Java Sea Pirates jumped overboard and drowned them selves trying to get at those lovely bottles of booze sent to Davy Jones. If this measure failed the last resort was to fire a salvo of booze bottles out of the torpedo tubes. :arrgh!:
