View Full Version : A New Stickied thread Please?

Well, ive been thinking and i believe there should be.

you see the help Sticky thread is So extensive and the posts and threads so numerous that finding awnsers in that sticky might take a looong while.

i believe we should have a new sticky thread about patrols and main objectives. the thread would mainly be full of screenshots/accurate descriptions on sightings of Task forces that contain objectives (i.e Where you saw a Task force in the med containing a battleship from force H). screenshots of this convoy/where you first saw or encountered them. there are plenty of threads started on "where do you find the carrier" or how do you know when the merchants are AMC?

this thread would be a nice compilation of multiple sightings of multiple main objectives, and can even include just some very large convoy or task force so people can make informed decisions on where to patrol and where to stake out so they can complete that objective with some time to spare.

if you dont want to upload a screen shot, you could give a detailed explanation about the grid coordinates and a basic description of where its at like uhhh between 36 and 37 Latitude lines, southeast corner of the grid, battleship with 4 escorts sighted, Main objective or something. i find that if the mods create this thread that even if it grows to large proportions that people will still pretty easily find multiple Sightings and answers quickly, and decide the best spot to camp it out until that main objective comes steaming along

Im not sure if any1 else has suggested this, but in any case it should be a moderator made sticky thread. Thank you for considering. :salute:

I'll tell you what I tell everyone that asks for yet another sticky: We have too many stickies already. Members should not have to scroll to read the latest posts.

There's 11 of them. That's a lot.

yes but quite a few of those are so general its actually hard to find a specific answer, and since not many people read that thread often enough, posting is going to take a while to get a response.

and people have to scroll down anyway, because when you go into the forum your at the top of the page and, with all due respect, i dont see why people cant spend a fraction of a second more scrolling down the page another millimeter to see new threads. and this thread will most likely eliminate quite a few of those where to find threads. theres even about 3 right now that are on the first page. it seems to me that collective knowledge on one subject would be alot more helpful then the giant Super-thread for help because people arent really reading anymore and if you want an awnser your gonna have to go dumpster diving or wait a few days or even a week most likely before someone can awnser.

however while i may find this idea to be helpful, it is just an opinion, and while it is for the most part up to you, i believe that if enough people consider it that it should be made reality. :salute:

I have to say that I think it a good idea, especially since the search option is such a chore nowadays.

Perhaps we could do away with the Easter Egg thread? It would appear to me that there aren't any Easter Eggs in SH5?

Just found that out myself from reading another thread - thanks for the heads up though matey:yeah:

Still I think it a valid point that the "Easter Egg" thread is a wasted sticky, and the kind of thread that Mattj is talking about would be quite useful.

I'd be interested in what others here think.

I agree about the Easter Egg thread, but a thread where everyone can post what they saw and when? Why not just start such a thread. If people post there alot it should stay on page 1, and if not then maybe it wasn't such a good idea after all.

well, yea but it may experience highs and lows, and maybe one day a low will come for like 4 days and lots of people post new threads and bam it will most likely sink, and new people wont know about the thread. and really its for them and people who just cant find anything. i mean look at all the sticky threads now. theres not much activity anymore. not as much as there was. the help thread is too extensive and not alot of people visit that thread As often anymore so asking something there might take a few days Or just and hour or it may never be awnsered.

^^ Mattj's idea

This isn't really about posting anything though - this is about the numorous "How do I?" threads concerning the campaign objectives and where to find them. If done in a simlar way to the FAQ's thread (which in itself is huge and takes a fair amount of time to wade through nowadays) It would cut down on the amount of searching newbie members have to do.

I think at the time I'm posting there are two such threads in this forum now - asking the same questions that have been asked since the release of the game.

If Mattj's idea were implemented - all the posters would have to do is search that one thread instead of the whole forum.

Dunno - just seems like a good idea to me.

:yep:

And, "'Fix My SH5' Issue Compilation Thread" seems to have turned into a pipe dream.

The blog thread doesn't need a sticky; indeed, what is it even doing in the SH5 forum, let alone stickied?

"Modders to the rescue" and "SH5 easter eggs" are, IMHO, less useful than the thread the OP proposed. As SS said, if such threads become popular, they'll stay on page 1 (although looking at the last posting dates, I doubt it)...

it is, but the posts would be helpful too. give every1 a good idea of where they REALLY travel often and not some map with routes drawn on them, cause half of the time that map is wrong and you could spend a month + searching for 1 convoy or even just 1 ship. especially to find a main objective, but if people share where they saw it you can get an idea of the BEST place to camp for him. kills 2 birds with 1 stone, it eliminates the need for those threads and the noobies and unlucky people who cant find main objective ships get what they need. win win

I remember there was an SH3 Wiki Community Manual a few years ago. It died back in 2008 (server costs combined with lack of interest keeping it up to date), but as a basic overview of the game it was pretty good value. Perhaps someone might want to consider something similar for SH5?

Bear in mind that the moderator's guidlines reccomend no more than 5 stickies per forum. If I pull some down, I won't be putting new ones up.

I've said it before: I'll never understand people's obsession with stickies. They clutter up forums, make them visually unappealing and difficult to read. As you noted, they grow long and unwieldy, making their use questionable. And what is the solution offered every time? Make another sticky. Months later, we have the same problem again, but with 12 stickies this time. We have a search function that can get you any and all information with the click of a button. I suggest using that instead.

I'm not trying to sound mean, but I've already told you I wasn't going to do it. However, I will be pulling down Fix My SH5 after we get word one way or another. Regarding the other threads, they were stickied because the owner of this website wanted them there. I won't be touching them.

yes, but the anwsers will be specific, and using that search button is about the most time consuming thing you can do. the search gives you a bunch of useless posts or threads and you have to dig for so long by the time your done youll be a certified archeologist. and with all due respect i dont think 1 more sticky will make this site any less appealing. i know other people also ask for stickys but i think that the People in the forums should also have a say in whether or not a thread gets stickied for if enough people agree, the benefits will significantly outweigh the VERY low (in my opinion) cost. at least its not another screenshot or sticky that tells you about a book. it a thread with the idea of helping people and cutting the need for the same question being asked over and over. and its specific in the content so that people wont have to sift very long. the compilation of different sightings would make the awnser less hard to find and SOOOO much more helpful.
however, this is only my stance.

Actually, I find that the search function is far more efficient than reading through 50 pages of sticky, a length that is common for threads placed at the top of a forum. Sticky threads are inherently inefficient, and you cannot remedy inefficiency with more inefficiency.

I get between 10 and 15 requests for new stickies a week. Everyone wants their pet topic or project put at the top of the forum, which I guess is only human nature. If it were up to some people, this forum would be nothing but stickies. If it were up to me, there would be none. I think that the current 11 (soon to be fewer) are a nice compromise.

In any case, I'll say no more on the matter. I've given my answer four times. This thread could go on for another 10 pages and the answer would still be 'no'. However, I do thank you for taking the time to make suggestions. I may not agree or implement them all, but it is good to know that the membership takes an interest in SubSim and it's future.

EDIT: Off-topic, your signature is cool, but could you reduce it in size, please? SubSim doesn't allow for signatures more than 120 high by 400 wide and less than 100KB. Many thanks.

It's based on how large the actual file is, not how large you make the box in the signature window. You'll need to resize the via a graphic editor program, then upload it to your server.

i can easily change it, but i cant upload it anywhere, and since you arent allowed to upload pics I dont know where i would upload it onto the internet without making a profile on some Retarded website. i wonder why you cantupload.... hmmmmm :hmmm:

It'd be very polite towards other users if you removed the images from the sig altogether before they're sensibly sized. That sig is so outrageously big it hampers forum usage when it pops on the screen.

why can its only be 120 Tall? thats like impossible to find a pic at orr below that. besides ive seen plenty of people with much much bigger pics on their sigs (not bigger than mine, but bigger that the "maximum"

I turned off sig display a little while ago because it seemed at the time that there was a competition to see who could get the biggest signature. Now, I am totally oblivious to it all and get to enjoy reading a fairly clean screen. :yeah:

Not a bad choice at all, but I prefer to keep them on just to keep make the forum feel more alive. Dowly also usually has good looking chicks in his sig. If someone holds on to an annoying sig for long I just block them with Opera's built-in content blocker, an operation which takes a few mouse-clicks.
