View Full Version : Newb Question - Using the Hydrophones?
Arctic wolf

Sorry for the really noobie question. I was reading somewhere how you can manually control you hydrophone and listen to the sounds and stuff. When I go to my sonar officer nothing happens when I click on the hydrophone. How can I sit in his place and listen to sound contacts myself? Is it possible in GWX 3? Also, can I man the sonar in the same way?
Thanks in advance for your replies folks!

Ooo, Press 'H' I think. It should take you straight to the Hydrophone station.
You control the wheel by clicking on it in certain quarters. The volume can also be adjusted in the same way.
as Danlisa says + sometimes you can not hear the 'sound' outside the sub, so you can check this by starting and stopping the electric engines - thus you will hear outside and be able to listen to the swoosh-swoosh of distant props or looming destroyers!
i like to get to depth 15-20meters, switch off engines and listen, turning the wheel slowly. make sure your hydro guy isnt tired (full green bar above crew station) then, perhaps, crank up the Time Compression (TC) to about 32-64, no higher, really, than 128 and go about your duties. checking now and again for yourself and asking your hydro guy.
the volume control is a bit fiddly - but if you can hear your own engines clearly then you can listen to the distant props...:yep:
hope this helps

Also, get yourself a good pair of headphones - makes it easier to hear ship contacts:up:

Thanks for the replies guys. :DL Will try em out when I go out on patrol in an hour or so. I run SH3 on my laptop so I always have my ipod headphones connected. Expecting to hear some screws and propellers real soon.

Rightclick the corresponding pictures of your officers in the mainscreens make you jump into their shoes.
Using shortcut keys is as possible as rightclicking the 3D representation of the guy you want to be.
The volume knob reacts by virtually turning it or by simply clicking into it's upper and lower half.
Listen to a contact, then use the knob to hear the difference.
You can turn the hydrophone by holding down the left mouse button and dragging it around the dial as slowly or quickly as you like, or left click on a bearing and then fine tune it. The first time I used it I had a contact and chased it in frustration for hours of game time until I realized I was chasing my own engine noises like a dog chasing his own tail. Best to turn your own engine off. As well, if you are in very rough seas your hydrophone operator will occasionally pick up intermittent prop sounds.

Most definitely http://www.psionguild.org/forums/images/smilies/wolfsmilies/pirate.gif
Just don't turn up the volume and then give the surface command when you figure out there is nobody there.
I'd be grateful to hear from others what they think are great headphones for use with SH3. I'm thinking along the lines, obviously, of PC gaming headphones; I have no need for voice input, but I suppose any good set of gaming headphones will include a mike boom. Not a deal breaker for me, but if a good set of headphones only is available then those would be my preference.

I would like to get some decent headphones at some point as well - the ones I have now are el cheapo. So any suggestions would be awesome.
I remember looking at a pair of Logitech 'phones when I bought this PC, IIRC they were around $50 and I prolly wouldn't want to spend much more than that.

I'm pretty happy with Sony MDR-XD100's. Not expensive (well under $50), very comfortable (I never really notice if they are on - can wear them for hours - and sometimes have), and they sound good.
They're full coverage, so a bit hot in the summer, and they don't block outside sounds that well - which may be a good or bad point, depending. Come with a 8' long cord.
Up here in Canuckia, they're available at Best Buy and A&B sound, and I'd guess The Sony Store too.

That came as a revelation to me. I went around clicking on each officer and spending some time in their stations. :haha: Fascinating stuff. Thanks for that info Mittelwaechter. I have one problem though, I can't seem to tweak the hydrophone sound no matter what/where I click. :x Is there any other way of changing the volume besides the mouse? How exactly do you change it with the mouse! :damn:
I' planning on getting a good pair of headphones too. Although I try to avoid the big round ones that block out all external noise.

I also live in the Peoples Republik of Canuckistan as well and a Best Buy just opened up in my town. Now I don't have to travel to [Ugh!] Mississauga to buy my toys. Thanks for the recommendation.

Re gaming headsets, I've been using the Sennheiser PC151 for years. German gear, how appropriate.
To change the volume of the hydrophone you click on the small wheel to the lower right. Click on the top rightmost detent or hold the left mouse button down on the dial and "turn" it to the right. Try it; you'll soon get the hang of it. You might also hear more if you turn up the sound on your computer, but don't forget to turn it down again when you leave the hydrophone station. Stopping your engines eliminates the sound of your own screws and prevents them masking the sounds of other ships.

Yeah I've been trying that but not much success yet. What happens if I don't turn it down before leaving the hydrophone station? I did stop my engines gradually to notice the difference. Very realistic I must admit. :yeah:
I got some more questions folks. First, I downloaded Spirit of Machines sound mod and after installing it via JSGME I still do not hear any of the new sounds. Anything I'm missing out?
Second, is CommandCombat compatible with Spirit of Machines?
Last, I'm looking to install a GUI mod and I need recommendations on which one to get. (There are so many, OLC, Hitman, Rafael, etc) Which one are you guys using and would recommend if any?
... What happens if I don't turn it down before leaving the hydrophone station? ... We wrote about 2 kinds of volume buttons. One on the 3d hydrophone station, and one on your physical PC or speaker-set. The first is no problem to be left on. If however you turn up the volume through your PC/ speaker-set then you risk blowing out your eardrums (well maybe not that loud) when you give a command and the crew responds with the affirmation.

There should also be a PDF document in the mod folder.

I did as was instructed - copied the files into all the folders from 2-9. Still I hear none of the new sound effects. :-?:06:
