View Full Version : How many torps does it take to sink a revenge class battleship?

I jus wanted to know.
Happy Hunting...
That s the type of question to which there is no definitive answer. Are you playing SH3 unmodded or modded? It's possible to sink it with one, yet another time four can't do the job. As in real life, there are no certainties. You'll have to experiment in game or in a mission, and make note of the variables of your attack, such as the type of torpedoes, pistols, depths, weather, etc. In general, which covers a lot of latitude, three to four should do it, but there will be circumstances where less or more will be required. Even if you fail to sink it with your first salvo, it will most likely stop or reduce speed to the extent that should you survive the wrath of her escorts, you'll get another shot at her. Since you so rarely encounter such a valuable target at sea, I'd give it all four tubes. How many times does a Kaleun get a BB in his sights? Herr Doenitz will forgive your liberal usage of precious torpedoes, but is less likely to forgive you if you fail to sink it due to miserly usage of ordnance.

..... Since you so rarely encounter such a valuable target at sea, I'd give it all four tubes....
I didn't have that kind of luxury, I only had 2 fore torpedos left and 1 str torpedo.
I gave it all I had but unfortunatly, only 1 hit it's mark.
This was very frustrating,
I just had to ask, but thanks of the answer mate.
:salute:
It's a heartbreak, isn't it?:wah: I've also been in the situation where I knock a fat, juicy target out of a convoy, survive the counterattack and then lose the damage ship because the weather changed to fog or dark and stormy night. Tough break, but better luck next time, eh?

yea, better luck next time lol.
I jus wanted to know.
Happy Hunting... But I've got her down to just one, if the hit is legal, :yep:

Speaking of torpedos hitting targets, what was the mod which shows sections of the ship (fuel bunker and ammunitions bunker, etc.), I can't remember what it was called or where to start looking.
Vulnerability mod or merchant vulnerability mod, I can't remember which. I have found playing in GWX Gold that the hit spots light up if I am within 1,000 metres and within 20 degrees of perpendicular.

I bagged one in a convoy with two torpedoes (one under the forward guns, one under the rear) I blew that thing apart, it was like a fireworks show.
The second was in Scapa Flow (always a great way to end a career) that one took four around midnight, then after my port raid I hit it again with two more and it sunk sometime in the early morning (then I was next :haha:)
If you can manage to get your torpedoes into her magazine compartments she will sink.

Anything from 1 to 6 depending on where you hit her.
Better to use magnetics and aim for the magazines.
I had very good luck by using a magnetic aimed at a 40 degree aob-:D

When attacking a capital ship give it every torpedo you have loaded and pointed in her direction.

"A good question. Let's find out. A One... A.two-HOO...A tha-three".. glub glub

If your a cocky b'stard,
a magnetic under a turret should do it,
If your more cautious, aim for the screws, then when she stops keep hitting her

According to The Royal Oak Disaster (G.S.Snyder) Gunter Prien used seven electrics (G7e) to sink Revenge sister HMS Royal Oak but only four (possibly only three) actually hit and functioned as designed.
Your mileage may vary.

I sank a Revenge class earlier tonight in my campaign. It was October of '39, and I stumbled across one north of Scapa Flow in my little type II boat just before dawn. I had only 3 torps left, and amazingly enough, all 3 of them hit even though I was using manual targeting from 2.5 km away. I had never scored so many hits from so far away before (I'm still new at this whole manual targeting thing). The whole ship exploded and sank within minutes. It was glorious!

I thought you said it was Revenge class....the Glorious was a carrier :DL:03:

Aiming under the turrets on any warship is the best spot. Obviously magnetics are preferred, depending on how rough the weather is that can be a high risk situation. In fair seas aiming under the turrets where the magazines would be you can sink any battleship with 2 topedos. Did so with the Hood one time when she was docked in Portland and landed two shots right under each and through the periscope watched a massive explosion just like when the Bismark really did hit her.
In poor weather or other factors that would keep you from using a magnetic setting, I'd launch all 4 with a tight spread. A good target for contact (and magnetic for that matter) is the boilers which are in the aft of the ship. Getting the boilers to explode can have nearly the save power as hitting the powder keg; and you'll effectively render her unable to sail under her own power giving you time to reload at least 1 more if she hasn't sunk yet.
Happened just yesterday on 89%, May 1940 west of scapa flow: Dived from a plane - hydrophone reports several warships:

And they are heading exactly towards me! I felt very lucky...and very afraid, too. Depth under keel: 110m.
I was able to fire all 4 bow torpedoes: 3 electric, 1 steam. The steam was a mistake: Being the fastest, Warspite saw it and turned portside. Too late, the torpedo hit...dud.
DAMN! I admit I thought about reloading - when would I ever have that much luck again? And now the Tommies will break my neck! I switched from exterior to the sub, focussing on escaping....
when about a minute later, 2 of the remaining 3 torps hit! Sorry, no picture. But I saw the 3rd after it passed by and warspite's bow had a large hole, right at the front. I guess cruising at high speed has disadvantages, too.

After the impacts. You may guess the slight disbalance to the bow. Also the attempted course change by the wake.

With all these ships around, I'm sure somebody picked up those guys. Is the one in the middle reading a book?! Those Brits sure are a calm folk...
And the best: Not one depth charge. 2 destroyers were seeking for me, one even pinged, but somehow I escaped. I guess the others decided to rather get the remaining ships home.

"Happened just yesterday on 89%" - you mean realism? I see auto tdc, external cam, and map contacts, now I didn't add it up but I play around 86% and thats with map contacts only

Sometimes just one or more Depending on the result, at the rear stopper formulas can be sensitive, then it needs a lot of force to go forward, or a hit at the ammo magazine, which mentioned by Jim! :yep:
Good morning!

I play with LSH3v5 with external cam, without manual targeting and with map contacts. Adds up to 88% (sorry for the 1% error). Don't know how this is calculated.

Great work, she certainly went down fast. Least you didn't have to hang around to confirm your sinking.
