These are very cool. You really get a good idea of what life was like. What a different time than what we know today.

That's the P-51A Mustang with the Allison engine...it almost cost the P-51 its legacy, because the performance was mediocre. Then the P-51B came along and married the airframe to the Merlin engine and history was made!

Great pictures! Interesting to see how it was back then.
53 is great, easy to forget how enormous the steam locomotives were. Puts it in perspective when there's a person beside it. :o :yeah:
H Class locomotive. Never heard of that one. :hmmm:
Found it.

They burned a lot of calories at work, I guess. :DL
And what AVG said above.
Growing up during the Great Depression would tend to make folks pretty lean i'd guess.

I had no idea that color photography was in development then. What a surprise when the page opened up in the browser and I see not black and white photographs, but color! Some really great, beautiful shots. :DL

on a serious note, this photo makes me think of "Hero of our Times" by M Lermontov, which happens in the Dagestan region.

Hey Russian guys, what is in those two rows of thin pockets he has on the chest of his coat? I used to think they were bullet holders but they're too big. Cigar holders? :hmmm:

Honestly, I dunno. :)
Btw, this guy is not exactly Russian. He's Chechen or Dagestan (southern muslim regions of Russia).
You can take a look at more incredible colour shots of Russia in late XIX - early XX century here (http://www.loc.gov/exhibits/empire/work.html), here (http://www.prokudin-gorsky.ru/database.php3?first=0) and here (http://sechtl-vosecek.ucw.cz/en/prokudin-gorsky/sever.html)
