Man, time for a rant. I hate LinkedIn with a purple passion. First, when someone "invites" you, you keep getting these &$#(* emails with no way to decline and stop them. You have to join LinkedIn to decline. That's stupid.

And ok, so I joined LI a few years ago. I never used it, it's not useful to me at all. When I recently got another invite to join some yahoo's LI network, I mistakenly signed in with my gmail account. And LinkedIn started sending invites to everyone in my address book--all 4000+ contacts :damn:

So for the last few weeks I have been explaining why I "invited" people I have not been in comm with for years to a LI network. Old sub vets, who are wary of everything. College mates who hate to be spammed. Old girlfriends who never wanted to hear from me again. Computer noobs who don't understand what LinkedIn is. ARGGGH! :dead:

And when I tried to find a way in LinkedIn to stop these mass spammings, I learned from another LinkedIn user

"that the ONLY way to stop that is to WITHDRAW each and every invite manually one by one,a very long and painful process I had to do it myself in the beginning but there is not other solution.

Oh, I found another way to stop this abuse: I deleted my LinkedIn account. :arrgh!:

LinkedIn, you SUCK!

"Facebook for grown-ups", ie. a social networking site aimed for business people.

edit: and yes it sucks when it behaves like that, as does FB. I especially hate it when the right-hand side bar recommends some crappy app "because this and this friend tried it", which is of course hogwash. I learned it the hard way after getting a few curious inquiries on some shady app I had never heard of, let alone used.

Whaaaat? It did that without your permission? Ain't that what is considered "Malicious code"?

That's terrible and frankly I am surprised that Linkedin would do that. I always though it was a pretty professional site. :nope:

Oh, in strictest definition, it had my permission. I did not read the fine print, (I did not even see it), so when I signed in using my gmail, it took that as permission to bombard my address book.

I feel for you, all that worry and wasted time for doing what we all do.

Just click on the accept button and try to save some of my few brain cells left.

If I read all of those things I clicked on ... I would have to be an attorney or something just to comprehend what their angle is that covers them.

I would've gone bonkers by now reading every thing they want you to ... Just put all of the warranties and agreements to enter and what not over in the same place the 93,000 pages of secret documents are posted (wiki) and then you can read both at the same time.

Get my irony :salute:

This is how they plan on taking over the world ...

Now all they need is a computer that can cross reference all of the data available, spitting out the one they are looking for at check points in and around every major city in the world.

They will scan your body for drugs, explosives, weapons of any kind, take your surface temperture, internal temperture, real and bio weight, sample of last known meal and remove any unused credit for the WWHP (world wide health plan) for their services.

Wait till you hear what they do to people that they can't cross reference with social networking groups or banking and investment groups.

They send them to other planets ... other solar systems are being prepared even as we social network ... this ain't no lie.

Just to play devil's advocate for a moment. Lets consider three significant points

1. LinkedIn is a very expensive webservice to run. There are coding costs, server costs, and a whole bunch of other expenses most people don't know about, but with LinkedIn, being so large, so will the expenses. And I have not mentioned profit for the owners of LinkedIn.

2. Joining and using LinkedIn costs the user nothing.

3. You have to think, where is that money coming from to maintain the service? Nothing is free on the Internets Tubes.

There is only so much money you can earn from click adds. Sights like LinkedIn, Facebook, Myspace and all the other emerging "social" sites are in the business of selling information......your information. Maybe not all your information, but enough to pay the bills.

So one really has to think carefully about joining a "free" social site like LinkedIn. Why would this company offer this service for free?

As I get older, I am realizing more and more that I simply can't afford stuff that is "free".

:haha: Funny story, a few years ago, there was an ad someplace that you could get a free "Axis and Alles" game, if you filled out our marketing servey. Halfway through the very intrusive servey, I decided: "If I send this in, my name, address, and phone number will be sold out like a cheap hooker, so I tossed the servey. It wasn't worth the 4 tons of junk mail I'd get from it.

I agree that some of the LI spam is crap, however I do get some value from it. I've recently been looking for another job and have had several leads and indeed offers of employment from people in my network and their networks.

Like all social media, it is important to understand what it is for and how you plan to use it before adding anything private about yourself on it. And to be honest if the worst thing someone can do is try to sell me something, as a consumer I can always excersise my right to not buy it.
