View Full Version : Random crush depth

I have this turned on in my options setting. I was wondering if this 'random' depth is defined at the start of the campaign, each time you leave port, or if it is randomised each time you submerge?
I went deeper than I had been before the other night- well into the red (not intentionally by the way, major flooding at the front of the boat started dragging me down) but my boat survived. If the random figure is fixed, then presumably I have a reasonable indication of what that crush depth might be, or at least I can define some 'safe' depths.
Whilst on the subject- What is the deepest depth you guys have managed to get a type VII without pressure damage?

The crush depth will change each time you load the sim with SH3 Commander. I've been down to 260M before and survived.
I myself have never gone deeper than 140 meters (never had a reason to), but you will receive ample warning when you are near or at crush depth. Glass on gauges will break, light bulbs will shatter and other signs. Raise you depth 10-20 meters and you should be good.

I have only gone down below 200 once, but I never returned. Depth charges forced my boat to go down further, and ot the point of no return.

260M wow. Seems I haven't been pushing my boats anywhere near to how deep they can go. Only 147M in a IIB and 180M in VIIB
Also use SH3 Commander with random crush depths. I may even add your comments into my SH3 Commander nightclub chat so I can start using this new knowledge.

Do random crush depths through Commander at least let you go all the way through the yellow zone without damage as per stock?
In other words, does the randomization randomize a DEEPER depth, or does it also randomize to give a potentially SHALLOWER depth?

IIRC...both

Here is an old thread I started a while ago that asked about what depths people have reached

I usually find the thermal layer, where the asdic loses you, at 200M-240M, when it is present.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but, wasn't thermal layers one of the many missing features in SH3?
It was never modeled in, but SH3 Commander simulates this to some extent by decreasing ASDIC and hydrophone detection when you are at a certain depth. I don't know what the depth is, but I think that it is around 100 meters.

Well my boat got down to 230 meters- accidentally as mentioned- with no ill effects. From what you're saying though I shouldn't take that as a given every time.
How much warning do you get when you approach crush depth?
You hear the bolts start popping, and glass breaking, which means you have seconds to get back up 10-20 meters to keep from crushing.:yep:

It's random between a few sets of figures.

100 metres would have been far too easy :DL

I suppose I could try these questions: What is the maximum depth you can go before the dice start rolling? And what would the absolute maximum be even if you were to get lucky and roll a double 6?
Well, lets just say 260M is pushing it in a type VIIC.:yep:

Definately a double 6 there HW3- On gold plated dice!

Just don't go looking in the various submarine NSS CFG files and take the MaxDepth figure of 500 meters as anything like believable http://www.psionguild.org/forums/images/smilies/wolfsmilies/whistle.gif
