Well, here I am not too far from base and out of fuel. Am I done for or is there any help I can get to crawl back to base?:damn:

Got enough battery life to return to base, if so dive just enough to where the batteries kick on and try limping back that way

When submerged you should run at the lowest power settings (1), it will give you greater range. Power settings 2 will give almost the same range as power setting 1. Power setting 3-5 will all greatly reduce range.
So if you are desperate about range, always use minimum speed ahead.
With standard speed ahead I managed to get some 21 km or so before battery reached 50%. With Slow Speed ahead I managed to get some 61 km before battery reached 50% and at the absolute lowest speed settings I got about 1.4 km extra from power settings 2.
Power settings 1 and 2 will give almost the same range. This test was done with the VCII/41 uboat btw. The ranges is not 100% "correct" as I only remember it grossly.
But it should work as a general rule.

Got to pay attention to fuel conservation. General rule of just about every submarine simulation is that the optimal cruising speed is in the neighborhood of 2/3rds.

Well, with only 9% battery I'll try the slowest speed submerged.

Before leaving base , plot the full course you will be doing and ask the navigator (range to course end) and (maximum range at current speed) . He is your navigator for a reason , i have never run out of fuel . You might have to alter your waypoints to suit your fuel usage during patrol .

Honestly I look at my fuel reading after I get to my patrol grounds, if its say 80% after I arrive to patrol area I know that I have to head back around 25% fuel, but I usually like to have an extra 10% to play with in case I find something on the way back to refuel

Absolutely. He's a great resource that's been ingame since SH3.
