Seriously though, I think it's likely that the game just shuts down at that time and date. The war is over - and as far as the game's concerned, your career ends when the war ends. It was not designed to allow a player to continue on as a "free agent" afterwards. You don't get the option to escape to a neutral country unless you can get there before the SH3 world rolls up the sidewalks and calls it a day.
It sounds like they've scripted stuff in until the end of May 1945, maybe to give you time to return to one base or another if you're so inclined. After that I'm guessing the SH3 world just ceases to exist.

That's a shame you can't carry on afterwards like some rogue skipper, or maybe if your radioman wasn't at his post you could be like that Japanese bloke on the island for years still thinking it was going on (did that really happen... oh, just found it - http://www.cnmi-guide.com/history/ww2/5/ ) :arrgh!:

One career i was on patrol when the war ended- I just went on grinding.
End came when I returned to port?

Well, I'm assuming it has to end at some point. If you go into the Mission Editor and look at the files that control "the action" - all the shipping, aircraft, etc. that you encounter during the game - it appears that a start date and end date is required for everything. Certain types of ships from this or that nation spawn at certain points at various intervals and sail along a particular shipping route for a particular length of time. It didn't appear to me that it was possible to leave those things open-ended, so that traffic would continue to spawn indefinitely as long as you continued playing.
It may be a function of the game engine. The game was designed to let a player simulate commanding a u-boat during WWII, so there would be no point in programming a world where it was possible to keep playing very long past the RL surrender date. And the original documentation is pretty clear about the fact that your career ends when the war does.
