There was an aticle in the 1940 NYT reguarding a speach which given by Col. Charles Lindbergh where he advocated the normanlization of relations with which ever side was victorious in the conflict. (I'll try to find it)
It left me with two distinct impressions.
1. That it may have been thought the conflict was going to be short.
2. The US was still a small, perhaps upcomming power, which was very much on the fence and looking for a way to stay out of the conflict.
