View Full Version : That warm fuzzy feeling.... so gone.
Fired up SH5 this morning to start the first of what I was hoping to be one of many real time patrols.
"You need an internet connection to play Sh5"
Really..... I have broadband cable. Apparently Ubi.com... andf the game servers are all on vacation. The only thing I can find is the Ubi Forums online. Everything else is down.
Riiiiight. Who's brillient idea was DRM again? I think every time my game goes down.. he should be refused oxygen.
Here we go for the kazillionth time.
Here's an idea moderators: Start handing out brig time for everyone who doesn't make a search before posting, especially for threads like this that we got dozens if not hundreds already.
And being a whiny bitch. :DL

Yep, Its been no go for about a half hour now. The servers went down and took me out of my game. Thankfully Bioware isn't completely bat**** stupid about DRM and I can get some Mass Effect 2 in this morning.

It's a heads up no-one can play their game. DUH.

I'm pretty sure they can tell by trying to play the game. And I'm ok with a heads-up to be posted, but for that we too have kazillion threads around.
Well, you have to expect it. When the server goes down... new thread. At least I'm not trying to jack up the forums with usless DRM bashing threads... although it's a good opportunity. :D

To me, asking a customer to pay $49 for a game, and then you the Publisher decides when the customer can actually play it is fundamentally wrong.

Correct! I agree 100%. Unfortunately because subsim's policy I cannot write to play without DRM.
I feel pity for people, who are unable to play the game due ubisoft's DRM. :yep:

Talking about or implying one is using a "crack" or some other way to circumvent DRM (which is in most countries illegal) is also against Subsim policy. :03:
We do NOT allow discussion or even mention of warez, abandonware, peer-to-peer game swapping, game cracks, illegal download sites, or illegal file-sharing. Nothing will get you banned faster than pointing people to illegal software distribution sites. Don't ask for serial numbers, manuals, or cracks. Any admission that you have in your possession illegal software can and usually will result in revocation of your Radio Room forum account and permanent ban.

Furthermore, at *snip* there are "NOCD" possibilities. I can remember that I have read this on subsim concerning SH3.Furthermore, the place you mentioned is a known place to get cracks for multiple games. Which makes it against the subsim policy to post about here.
I won't report the post, but someone's going to see it sooner or later and give you a "prize" for it.

It comes close, currently the most valuable I have is the one I got from the "SH5 mutiny" where Hitman started to hand out infractions to everyone who wouldn't shut up. :haha: It was reversed later on, but I still carry it proudly. :yep:

Censoring the manual campaign selection instructions seems very silly now that there's a campaign selector, which should automatically do the same thing, available right here at Subsim. Then there's also the cheatcode silentotto which unlocks the campaigns ingame, although I don't know if that works without the connection to Ubi's servers. On top of that it seems that the latest "fixes" require none of that anyhow.

Barking at the wrong tree, mate. It was Subsim's decision to take it down, not mine. Just pointed Rafael that it had been taken down before and might still not be acceptable to post. :salute:

But could that 'example' be used to play an illegal version of the game without having to worry about the DRM? I didn't read it completely this time around, but I recognized it as the one that was taken down here and at Ubi. :hmmm:

08-06-10, 09:46 AM
I didn't even see the link this time, but I assumed it was the same thing yes. To put it shortly it should allow you to manually select any campaign, just like the campaign selector does. Apparently having the game automatically progress was a problem for the hackers at first, and such a manual method was embraced with open hands in those circles.
Well.... while everyone is discussing the moral issues of bypassing DRM.... the server is back up! LAFF! :arrgh!:

Why is Abandonware not allowed? It is, after all, by definition, software where the copyright has expired, and is totally legal in all sectors, except in countries where political censorship occurs... and then it's not a copyright issue....
Seriously though?

There are many AW sites that are perfectly legit, but majority of them tend to offer all kinds of old games regardless if the copyright has expired.

Abandonware is not the same as freeware. Not untill the copyright expires, anyway.

When I was a teenager it was the '60s and long hair was just becoming the big thing. I wanted to grow my hair out, and my dad said "No". When I wanted to argue, he gave me a list of reasons. When I wanted to argue with those, he went for the bottom line: "My house, my rules".
When this Abandonware discussion comes up, I usually waste a lot of time and energy trying to explain Subsim's standing and reputation in the gaming industry, and trying to make the questioner understand what and why. But the bottom line is:
Because this is a privately owned forum and those are the rules of the site owner.
It doesn't get any simpler, more direct or more final than that. Neal's house, Neal's rules. End of discussion.

Sailor Steve has got a point. At my law firm we use the “Baloney-B-Gone 8300” surplusage detector to whittle away attorney overrun (because nothing will annoy a judge faster than wasting his time with unnecessary blather). Before I ran the above-quoted text through the detector I was careful to set the unit on “style shredder,” one notch below the maximum “full auto delete.” Nevertheless, the B-B-G 8300 got so overheated that it blasted through the roof in a pillar of fire hundreds of feet high, spun around a couple of times, and landed on the multi-purpose orphanage/animal shelter next door, burning it to the ground and causing an outbreak of weekend pro bono work. To make matters worse, the blast was picked up by a spy satellite that had been placed geosynchronous orbit over the office by the managing partner to keep track of which associates were not putting in their full 38 hour day, and which, unfortunately, someone with a grudge against Consolidated Polluters International (a firm client) had hacked into so that all the pictures got downloaded to Wiki Leaks and published in the New York Times. So now outside we’ve got PETA and Global Warming, Inc., camped on the front steps threatening to sue us for melting the ice caps and killing baby polar bears and inside Al Gore’s eaten everything in the break room, including the entire vending machine. Of course, we’re filing suit against the manufacturer of the B-B-G 8300, and they’re counter-suing for wanton and reckless endangerment of the planet and pain and suffering, including, mental anguish. So, like I said, Sailor Steve has got a point. But I've since forgotten what it was.
Happy Friday, peoples.

I've just watched 'The Last Airbender', a film in which the characters control the elements of Earth, Air, Water and Fire with the power of their minds and their chi energy (it's a bit of a kitbash story). The plot is centred around the fire nation, a nation of fire benders, who seek mastery over the other three bending factions. I won't give any plot spoilers away, but it's about the whole fight thing.
Characters in the film have mastery over the various aforementioned elements and can 'bend' them to their will in order to fight opponents and to be born as a bender is quite rare (I think, had trouble following the film that closely).
So, it struck me that 4Para was merely bending the words to his will and his unorthodox use of grammar and spelling is merely a consequence of this bending to his will. 4Para is possibly the last word bender on the forum, I have not seen anyone else with his bending ability. I hope not to be sued by Mr M. Night Shyamalan for this comparison. Perhaps he is a bender of the fifth kind?
No matter what is said in response, 4Para will always be a true bender in my eyes. He truly is a bender with great potential :salute:.

I don't see the use of language like that as snobbery.. though I do consider it rude when people seem to have trouble understanding what you're saying and you do little to enlighten them. Worse so would be the rudeness if it became knowledge that you're only speaking in those terms to appear more intelligent or "better" than the person.
If it became the case to speak in terms or ways that no one can understand you means that you are intelligent, I might as well start speaking Cantonese with French, Russian, Spanish and English thrown in there for kicks.

I thoroughly agree with you. 4Para is hurting no-one writing the way he does and he always brings a smile to my face when I read his posts.

I have nothing against him at all, except for most of the time I have no clue what he's talking about. As I said before, he's free to post any way he likes, but when something makes no sense to someone you shouldn't be upset when someone asks what you said, let alone what you meant.

Also, I understand the problem where non-English members may not understand him.. but I speak English and I even have trouble understanding him. Added to the fact that the majority of the things he posts don't make sense nor do they contribute to the topic makes him a troll in a sense. If he's happy to be the comic relief, then that's good (for those that aren't annoyed by it), but sometimes those posts do derail the thread... like this one. When it turns into a discussion about the use of language of what is grammar of whatever, then that's when pseudo-period speak goes bad.
Fair comment Steve however, it's the way some of the other posters asked that I think was the problem.
If you make a concious decision to post in such a way, then you shouldn't be overly concerned about people commenting on it, as people will always comment on the unusual. So, given that then I should think that he's not really upset by it, he's just using it as a reason to post more of the same pseudo period speak. This is a discussion forum after all and the purpose of it is to enable people to communicate, but there's room for a single 4para. If more people start posting like that, then I think it would be different (would verilly that it be forsooth!).
I mean, I hope it was a concious decision, as I did consider the possibility that he was a stroke victim and was unaware of the format of what he was posting. I hope we're not all getting amusement from that. I'd feel bad about that.

Seriously, just ignore him. Not hard. I've never understood anything he's written. I think it's all a lame attempt at erudition, given that no-one with any education would write "Iam" as opposed to "I am", for example.
He's the only one on my ignore list, for no other reason than I have better things to do than decipher what he's writing, which, when I do, usually has nothing to do with the subject at hand...

I love Monty Python, and have since 1972. And I love it when someone posts a link to a video, but I hate it when people at parties or forums feel they're funny when they recite the whole skit themselves.
Just my opinion.
WHY wont any moderator step in and butcher this thread like Jason butchers innocent people. you did it for maintain depth, but not htis?
Because in the 'maintain depth' thread some members became incredibly rude, insulting other members rather than discussing the issue calmly - like grown ups do.
That breaks the rules of the forum - no personal attacks.
Whilst this thread may be a member of the living dead, and wildly off topic to boot, it has in the main been fairly polite.

I love Monty Python, and have since 1972. And I love it when someone posts a link to a video, but I hate it when people at parties or forums feel they're funny when they recite the whole skit themselves.
