Here's a tip: Never forget the basics even in a perfect scenario. Let me explain. I'm not talking about combat tactics so much, but rather basic gameplay behavior. Tip number 1: Never leave the room without pausing the game! I torpedoed a 6000 ton freighter and had her dead in the water on fire. She was about 1,200yds away. Feeling satisfied, I left the room to start breakfast and figured I'd find her sinking when I got back. Instead, I was just in time to see my sub plow into the side of the stricken ship!

Tip number 2: When playing RFB, always remember to move men to Hogan's Alley while submerged! The subsequent collision injured my guys because I neglected to move them. Thankfully I was only going 3knts, so the damage wasn't great, and the men had minor injuries for the most part. The freighter finally went down, helped by the accidental nudge I gave it! Boy do I feel like an ameture!

I prefer to look at it this way: you maneuvered your sub into a strategic position so that your deckhands could reach up and push the ship over with their bare hands. They simply strained their backs in the process.:D
Now, send that progress report into Pearl and you'll have nooooo problems.:salute:

There have been many moments where I too feel like I've never played this game before. It seems to have a way of sneaking up on you when you least expect it. learn from the experience and move on. At least that's what I try to do. :D

That's exactly the way it happened Admiral, I swear!:haha:

LOL.

I was given free reign to patrol the Celebes Sea (RFB/RSRDC). I decided to nose into Davao. (staying well into the deep water near the mouth).

I plotted a course, and pumped up the time compression. It dropped me to a slowed compression when it said "shallow water" and I hit F5 to get to the bridge and drop it to TC 1.

Good thing.

"Hard a starboard!"

I was parallel to the steep coast within a few seconds, a "biscuit toss" away (Patrick O'Brian ref ;) ). No kidding, that close to wrecking the boat. Glad it dropped straight away to deep water, the shallow water triggered within maybe 1-2 boat lengths of the cliff. Had my course intersected the coast at better than the ~45 degrees it did, I'd have been toast.

Gotta remember to check my transit routes on the chart.

On the plus side, I nosed in to find TWO heavy cruisers on the way out at pretty high speed right towards me with no escorts and sank one of them. Woot! (they were so fast I had no time to set up. I roughly squared my course to them at flank underwater, then fired a spread at zero gyro angle aimed just by leading him ~15 degrees (and use of the spread angle). Fired all 4 tubes and gave him a list (and slowed him by ~1/2), had to end around to finish him.)

I thought I had a clear path back to Brisbane and hit high TC and went and filled my coffee cup to come back and find my sub in a palm tree.
Was a great patrol, no save.

If this is the dumbest thing you have ever done in SH4, then you are far far from being a moron. :yeah:

A morron is someone who takes a XXI boat, a month before the start of WWII, from Germany, to Scapa Flow, and torpedo's two Tribal class DDs, then...THEN has the gal to dock AT SCAPA....Well, seeing it was a month before WWII, i could dock at Scapa instead of returning to port...Well, they poped me on shore and said have at it...

But thats funny, just as you come back..."ALARM! Brace for impact!"

Glad to see I'm not the only one with a SH4 moment!:D

Well....I've managed to "dock" my sub on a couple of beaches....while doing high TC....I "thought" I had plotted my course safely away from the beach, but.....

I was bringing my sub into Freemantle, determined to get it home before I stopped for the night, I poured myself yet another glass of bourbon.:()1: I turned the radio on and was listening to "World News Today" and sitting there at my desk, head in hand, I fell asleep. I woke up when the mayhem began.
I T-boned that damn aircraft carrier that sits outside Freemantle all the time. :D

To send a message, click on the "Ship's Wheel" icon at the lower right corner of your screen. Up pops a message board. The first tab is for sending status reports and contact reports. Hope that helps:yep:

Well, looks like I outdid you in this category, Fish40. In fact, my mistake was one of the basics when it comes to no-nos. Therefore I'm nominating myself as President and CEO of the Morons Club! I leave Miday on May 25th, 1943 to start a new patrol. My assignment? Patrol for 4 days within a 150nm zone that sits smack-dab in the middle of the Formosa Strait. Wow, that's no small task, I say to myself. Ahh, I can handle it, and I shrug it off. Next, I travel for over 2 weeks and almost 4,000nm. I reach the Formosa Strait and immediately pick up a sonar contact. A Medium European Composite, but its too far away, outside my zone and heading in the opposite direction. I decide to let that one pass as I head into the north end of the strait. Consequently, that sonar contact prompted me to get my sub in order in case of any sudden contacts.
I start by loading Deck and AA guns. Then I go to the torpedo station and, WTF!!! Where are all my torpedoes?!!! Turns out that, in a rush to drag & drop the torps, I sort-of missed a few. Actually, I had only half of my stardard compliment. So, long story short, I raided the harbor at Taipei (5 merchants and 3 small warships), kept only 2 torps each in the Fore and Aft tubes (in case of an encounter going home) and, well, now it RTB with my tail between my legs for another 4,000nm, all in less than 24 hours.:nope::damn::wah:
