So what do the q-ships in the q-ship mod look like? Can you tell they are armed, or do the packing crates on the deck just start shooting at you?

Maybe I don't pay enough attention to what should be obvious details, but I never know they're armed until I surface and they start shooting at me. And at that point all I know for sure is that I'm dealing with an armed target that may or may not be a merchant. I find out for sure they were Q-ships when they're listed as such in my patrol log, provided I sink them.
But I think in real life their weapons were disguised or hidden in some way, otherwise what would be the point? Since IIRC they were intended to lure u-boats in for what looked like an attack on an unarmed merchant and then turn the tables on them. It wouldn't be much of a trap if their armament was clearly visible to an approaching enemy.

So what do the q-ships in the q-ship mod look like?
They look like small unarmed steamers - too small to waste a torpedo on.
In my only encounter with a Q-ship, I was too busy crash-diving to notice if its guns were visible when firing - it killed my deck-gun crew.

IIRC I may have put a picture or two in the readme.

Yep you did :yep:
And no Maillemaker, you can't tell they're armed just by eyeballing them.
Trust me - when you meet one you'll realise soon enough :03:

OK, so they just look like small freighters. Where are the guns? Inside the cargo boxes? Do they open up to reveal the guns or does gunfire just erupt out of the boxes?
I always eyeball my targets before approaching with the guns.
Steve
Inside the cargo boxes, and gunfire just erupts out of the boxes.

Be very careful of what vessels you approach on the surface http://www.psionguild.org/forums/images/smilies/wolfsmilies/whistle.gif

First trip out with the q-ship mod and I ran across one on the east cost of Britain.
I have external cam on for now since I just installed a new skin and wanted to see what it looks like. Kinda blew the surprise because I external-cammed the ship and in fact you can see the guns hidden in the q-ship crates if you look carefully.
Sucker shot at me and damaged me even though I was submerged! They saw my scope.

The experience is a little more dramatic when you have no external cam enabled and come across one whilst on the surface :yep:

It's especially fun when you approach one submerged and undetected, put an eel into what seems to be an ordinary merch, and then (as I am wont to do early in the war) surface to finish her off with your guns only to start taking damage from her guns before you can even get up to the bridge.
Fortunately they all seem to be smallish vessels and IME one well-placed eel is usually enough to sink them.

In the First World War the Q-ships became an art form. They carried extra crew whose sole job was to make a good show of abandoning ship. They would take to the lifeboats and everything. Then, when the unsuspecting u-boat would close in to board and lay scuttling charges...
Of course the Brits cried foul when the Germans started torpedoing them from underwater, but what's a poor u-boatman to do?

Of course the Brits cried foul when the Germans started torpedoing them from underwater, but what's a poor u-boatman to do?
First they don't like it when we give them a couple warning shots with the deck gun and then sink their ship after they've abandoned it.
Then they don't like it when we torpedo them from underwater.
Then they don't like it when we wait 'til after dark and torpedo them on the surface.
*heavy sigh*
There is just no pleasing some people.

One thing I noticed with the q-ship mod was that it is not listed as a q-ship either in the log within SH3, nor in the patrol log listed in Commander.
I used JSGME to install, plus copied the entries as listed in the readme.
But I'm not sure I copied the entries into the right files. As I recall the paths to the specified files did not match my install.
Steve

Possibly not.
I'm sure I remember seeing 'Q-Ship' in one of my Commander patrol reports.

My OS is XP Pro and not W7 (I will have W7 within the week though) I'm afraid but IIRC the C:\Program Files (x86)\SH3 Commander\Cfg\Ship names.cfg should be the correct one....back it up first just in case.
Are you using SH3Commander?
If not then ignore adding the individual [LOV] ship names but if you are you will need to locate the location of the ship mames CFG file.
Isn't there anyone using SH3 Commander and the W7 OS around these parts? :hmmm:

I came across my first Q ship last night, cheeky bugger even fired at me!
I don't get the Q Ship named in the logs either, not in SHIII itself, or within SHIII Commander. I'm pretty sure I added the lines in the right place. I'm running on XP though, so I can't help with the Win7 installation. At a guess :
C:\Program Files (x86)\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII\data\Sea\EngishNames .cfg is the right file within the sim and C:\Program Files (x86)\SH3 Commander\Cfg\Ship names.cfg should be the correct one within SHIII Commander.
Like I said though, I could be wrong, because it isn't working for me

Try searching for the the line Pebble Monkey suggests:
C:\Program Files (x86)\SH3 Commander\Cfg\Ship names.cfg
As I said earlier, I won't have the W7 OS for about a week :-?
The problem might be that starting with Windows Vista, the UAC in Windows messes up the changes of files when SH3 and/or SH3 Commander are installed inside the Program Files or Program Files (x86) folders. The solution is to install them outside of those files. Example C:\Games\ That way the UAC will not effect changes.

You may well be right.
The fact is the mod was created before W7 was released so I simply can't state what the situation is.....at least until I get the W7 OS.
Jim, Windows 7 has the UAC also, so do yourself a big favor and make a folder like in my example and install there.:shucks:

Or you can do like I do and just turn off UAC. You don't need it if you have an ounce of sense and proper computer protection with firewalls and anti-viruses.
