View Full Version : U.S., South Korea begin military exercises.
(CNN) -- Amid heightened tensions with North Korea, the United States and South Korea on Sunday began joint military exercises, according to a spokesman for U.S. Forces Korea.
The military exercise, dubbed Invincible Spirit, is scheduled to run through Wednesday and demonstrate the alliance's resolve. In addition to the 8,000 personnel involved, military officials say, it will include 20 ships and submarines and about 200 aircraft.
The U.S. Defense Department said the drills are in response to the sinking of the South Korean warship Cheonan and are intended to send a strong message to Pyongyang to stop "provocative and warlike acts."

I'd be more excited if it wasn't that US bases have Exercises nearly monthly, with about 3 (if memory serves) large scale joint exercises annually.
The DPRK has saber ratteling down pat, and they've wrote the book on brinkmanship, but they're still all show and no go.

The U.S. prides itself on the self proclaimed "world police" role, yet it squats and ****s whenever the opportunity presents itself. It is absolutely impossible to invade North Korea by any means, they have nuclear weapons and they hate the west with a passion, and here the U.S. brings tons of military equipment and personell to Korean soil?

Not really.
yet it squats and ****s whenever the opportunity presents itself.
That's politics, but no matter what the US does, it will be criticized. Damned if we do, damned if we don't.
It is absolutely impossible to invade North Korea by any means
Who said anything about wanting to invade the DPRK? The country will collapse on itself eventually, and why risk pissing off 20 million chinamen?
they have nuclear weapons
Maybe, but regardless, they have no reliable way to deliver them.
and they hate the west with a passion
So does everybody else. They can take a number and stand in line.
and here the U.S. brings tons of military equipment and personell to Korean soil?
And has been doing so for the last 60 years, annually. But you know, i'll wager that the average American GI could give less then a schitt about the ROK. Most would rather not be there at all, and ALL count the days they have left until they can go home from the moment they arrive.

No, just bored, and don't really give a crap. And if that's the best come back you can conjur, you need to go back to the Dojo of forum trolling and work on your Troll Fu, it's weak. I'd have more fun if i knew you were Korean, then i could say stuff that would really piss you off. Frankly though, I don't think your worth the time.

The ROKN still used Depth Charges and Bombs quite a bit. They are quite useful in the shallow Yellow Sea where torpedoes run the risk of going in the mud if dropped from a helo. Also they would be devastating against the slower DPRK wet subs and infiltration craft.

Considering the quality of North Korean subs they could actually be effective. :hmmm:

As Ducimus said earlier, it is not as though the DPRK has the intention of engaging in any conflict. Vague threat is the only card Kim Jong Il has to play.

Even the novice in world affairs knows that there is a tremendous difference between a clandestine sinking and the conduct of a full-scale military campaign. North Korea cannot adequately conduct such a war; a fact it's leaders are painfully aware of, if not willing to publically concede.

Yea they may not be able to wage a war but they are fully capable of provoking one :D
I'm just waiting if they would do that when the joint US-South Korea naval exercise is still ongoing or later.
The US/ROK will not strike first, it would work against their favour. Propaganda bonuses are awarded to the defendants after all in this game. :yep:
