View Full Version : Geographical and meteorological patterns?

So, I had nothing to do and decided to cruise around the world a bit and check out all the new harbors that came with the harbor mod (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=168545), then it dawned on me; how's terrain actually generated in this game?
Currently I'm too far away at the moment and so far I haven't noticed too many different maritime features, I'll get straight to it; does the Great Barrier Reef exist? If anybody ventured the coast of Australia.

Also the weather system, is it following actual patterns? Do we see more frequent storms around the intertropical convergence zone for example? And does thunderstorms exist? As well as snowfall?

With little activity I decided to find out myself; I'm taking my submarine on a round the world trip!

The point of the whole is to find out wether or not the geographical and meteorological patterns change.
I didn't pay any real attention to the Atlantic – for obvious reasons. Though I did notice that the further south I got, the water got a brownish kind of color.

Route:

I don't want to make it all too picture heavy, but so far I've discovered changes in botanical organisms – there are palm trees in north-eastern Brazil.
Weather across the Atlantic was as expected – cloudy. However, I did not encounter any storms while travelling through the ITCZ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intertropical_Convergence_Zone).

When I get to the Pacific I'll start gather data on weather patterns and see if I can come up with something.
You know, there's probably an easier way of finding this out to be honest. I'm just failing to see it.

One thing that didn't escape me though; why did Allied merchants move close to the Brazilian coast? All the ports in the area are neutral (with the harbor mod), there are two in the middle of the Atlantic, however these merchants were travelling south, towards Brazil.
They are scripted to follow certain routes, right?

On my trip back to Germany I was planning on going through northern Canada; is this even possible or would I have to run at minimum speed while submerged to get out of there alive?

Der Kampf geht weiter! :salute:

Aight! I'm making headway, managed to sneak into the Pacific using the planned route with no incidents.

Funny enough there were a couple of anomalies on the way. As I was about to check out one thing I discovered another; this (http://data.fuskbugg.se/skalman01/Maritime_anomaly1.JPG)! Even though the depth was... well, it was very deep all the objects were as suspended. Probably a normal bug, but I'm not sure why it'd happen? Seaweed and rocks, when I was going to get another picture they were gone.

Not sure if anybody else experienced it, but the moon tends to be up together with the sun, both lingering in the horizon. Might well have something to do with the mods I'm using;

Ligher night
Accurate German flags
Grossdeutscher Rundfunk
North Atlantic Green 1.1
Environment mod 2.5
New map colors (doesn't work with 1.2?)
New harbors
BRF 1.3 full

Anyhow! I stopped by the Falkland Islands (http://data.fuskbugg.se/skalman01/Falklands.JPG) and they were pretty much as expected, barren. Although(!) there were quite a lot of trees there, auto-generated I believe?

As promised, I'm compiling my great Systema aeris et humis in oceane Pacificu (excuse my latin):

The Pacific, Oct 24th: Haze 70°W 56°S. 11:45, 1939
The Pacific, Oct 25th: Haze 75°W 55°S. 11:30, 1939
The Pacific, Oct 26th: Haze 80°W 52°S. 11:50, 1939
The Pacific, Oct 27th: Haze 86°W 49°S. 11:35, 1939 // Sun not visible even.
The Pacific, Oct 28th: Haze 92°W 46°S. 12:15, 1939
The Pacific, Oct 29th: Haze 97°W 43°S. 13:10, 1939
I'm not sure what this haze is, I haven't encountered it before in the Atlantic. Picture (http://data.fuskbugg.se/skalman01/Haze1.JPG).

Now, you might be wondering why I'm doing this? Well, I just don't have that much else to do.

Nevertheless, the show must go on!
