View Full Version : New Baby!
Sailor Steve

Things are happening with my band again. Our new drummer seems to be working out. He's having some personal problems, but aren't we all?
Our lead guitarist had a processor die on him, so he replaced it only to find out his 25-year-old amp was going as well. So the other guitar player/singer and his wife pitched in and now they have matching Marshalls.
And me? I just got me a brand-new (well, actually it's six years old, but it looks like it's hardly been played at all) Ibanez SR-505 Bartolini-pickuped active EQed 5-string. Not only is the thing a dream to play, but the sound is amazing! There are so many possible tonal variations that it's almost like having a built-in effects processor! It may be months before I figure out what sounds I want to use on what songs.
And she looks good too! Just ignore that ugly guy she's with. Some girls have no taste.

Great instrument you snagged there. Good to hear you're enjoying playing with the band too. May the new stuff serve you well at gigs :)
oooh, very nice
I always did like to see the grain of the wood in a guitar, a natural finish is both pleasing to the eye and finger-tips.
Mine's an old westone 4 string, fretless with split mid and an extra bridge pickup (a seymore-something or other). It's a passive doodad, so sometimes the brightness is difficult to bring out (especially with flatwound strings), but it has a lovely warm tone to it.
It was second hand when I bought it but it's a lovely solid instrument.
I should really play it more often.

She's a beauty Steve..... nice long neck and slender body with lovely curves. Used to own an Ibanez myself, albeit the 6 string variety, and I had loads of great years with that guitar.
What sort of tunes are you banging out then?

They make 5-string basses?
And here I thought bass players could only count to four. (Or is that drummers?) :O:
J/k, she's a beaut. I guess. I don't know from basses.

I was a bass player once....
I had a red epiphone 4 string with gold hardware, it was like a ferrari.
but I moved on to guitars, and I have a dean flying v (custom painted by myself to look like Eddie Van Halen's Frankencaster)
an Ibanez RG model, amber, with a locking termolo, in case I need to do dive bombs
and I recently nabbed a blue squier strat, since I enjoy surf rock so much.
But that's a really pretty bass!

Good news, I understand some of them are already lining up for tickets to the next gig:

They make 5-string basses?
Yes. They make six-stringers too, but they are mostly fretless. Or at least the decent ones are. Victor Wooten's six is fretless.
EDIT Nice axe, Steve. The Ibanez four strings are the industry standard.

Fortunately Steve can still move fast enough to outrun them.
Well, most of them, anyway. The ones on Rascals (http://www.abledata.com/product_images/images/06A0454.jpg) catch up sometimes. It's not pretty.

Yes you should. Guitars are like women - the more attention you pay to them the happier they are. :sunny:

Folk-Rock-Country-Metal-Blues. Five of our 70+ originals are on our MySpace page, link in my sig.
Also video of one of our heavier gigs, with our old drummer:

What amp do you play through?
Behringer 1x15 combo amp, 300 watts. I'm looking at upgrading to another Behringer, the 550-watt head with a couple of external speaker cabinets. That's in the future though. For some unknown reason I seem to be broke right now...
Awesome looking strings there Steve :yeah:

Yep, he should be able to row a lot faster with that large oar :DL
No pics yet steve, internet ain't got none that look exactly like mine either. Not sure my phone camera is up to the job, so in the mean time http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fEPLzhIWTGc there's some awesome double bass 6:45
EDIT:
ok rather than use crappy phone, a little bit more searching produced this: http://www.servimg.com/image_preview.php?i=43&u=14916313 (on the right hehe) now, imagine it with a no frets, a second pickup near the bridge and another dial where the jack plug socket is.
The guy who owns the one in the picture is a lucky sob - mine's not quite as lustrous as that :(

Played one a couple of years ago, sexy little minx's they are too. :yeah:
Edit: also one of the great things about the Boss ME-70 is you can use it whilst it's on the floor too :O:

Very true, but some of the settings are twisty knobs, and while you're learning the twelve gazillion possible settings it's much easier not to have to bend over all the time, especially at our age. :dead:

Very nice! I also looked at a Peavey Grind 5, and it had a lighter skin tone with stripes like that. I liked the neck-through-body design
http://www.peavey.com/products/browse.cfm/action/detail/item/116714/Grind%20Bass%205-String.cfm
But in the end the active pickups won out. That, and availability. I would have had to wait a week for the Peavey. The Ibanez was hanging on the wall.

Those Peavey's are nice. I had a go on one in my local muso shop.
I know what you mean about the active electronics, there's a world of tone control at your fingertips.
With that in mind, I was soooo close to buying one of THESE (http://www.dv247.com/assets/products/73108_l.jpg) a few years ago. Yamaha TRB1006J 6 string bass...
Excuse me whilst I wipe the drool off my chin and my keyboard.
Then again, if money was no object, I'd have probably acquired a Warwick Bass.

Holding out for a Rickenbacker :)
Well, I say that now, I'll probably get something else instead for reasons of $$

Used to play guitar through a Behringer V-AMPIRE, sadly not mine. Good brand.
