Serious question, who is Pete Doherty? Has he released anything in the US? I know that I am not "hip" to the latest in music, but I have never heard of him. After reading this article, perhaps I am the better off for it.

Wow, one of them got to #10 in the US. Good for him. I don't recognize any of the songs though (not that I am especially an authority on this sort of stuff)

Their event, their rules.
It wasn't a government action so, no Freedom Of Speech issues there.

Hmmm. I didn't know there were Nazis in 1797, when the song was written. Or in 1841, when the words were written.

That is not correct sailor, It was decided after the war, and then confirmed again after reunification, that only the third stanza is the national anthem of the Federal Republic of Germany. Do not get misled that it is called the "Deutschlandlied", or that earlier German nations before the Federal Republic used the text in full as their anthems.
The other two stanzas can only be understood in their content when comparing them to the background and it's historic contexts of the time in which the text was written (long before the Nazis) - else they give right the impression that the Nazis made so terrible abuse of. Thye sang it and used to let it follow immediately by the Horst Wessel Lied.
Again, the Deutschlandlied is not the national anthem of Germany. The third stanza is the official national anthem, and only that - not more. The other stanzas not only are not part of the anthem of the Federal Republic, but are a taboo.
I am not putting to much attention on symbols, so I for myself let you live :), but keep in mind that possibly you can really piss a German when singing the full song to him and telling him that it would be his national anthem. For many Germans that is as offending as if you were telling them what a great Führer the Führer has been (happened to me many times in the ME :-? ).
The other stanzas are quite nationalistic and supremacistic, they are no loss nowadays, since their hinstoric context does not exist anymore anyway. The text of the third stanza that we now use, actually is one of the niciest national anthems I have ever heared. Many others have too much blood-dripping violence and pathos, for my taste. So I think Germany has chosen well. during the Football world championship, I used to switch on subtitles during the anthems, where they translated the texts of the anthems played. Sometimes they left me speechless.

I could have sworn someone mentioned nationalism and supremacy in a positive fashion. It had something to do with blacks and muslims making soccer teams rubbish and sportsmen not singing their national anthems with enough national gusto.

From the context I understood you that way that your remark was meant to say that the full Deutschlandlied (=all stanzas) is the anthem. The issue is settled then, and just was a miscommunication. Depends on what that single word "it" was referring to - the "song" as you called it - Deutschlandlied - , or the third stanza.

Actually I was refering to the melody itself. Here in the US we stand up and salute when the song is played - the words are purely incidental. Definitely a miscommunication. :sunny:

the only anthem that has no text, is the Spanish. where there is text, it is important. I think you Americans would be pissed if the melody of the US anthem gets combined with an excerpt from one of Castro's speeches! :D
