Ive done a total reload of SH3 +Cmdrs today and during gameplay am getting "New message recieved" constantly. Any ideas how I can fix it?
Cheers!

You might try this mod.
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/downloads.php?do=file&id=545
It takes away all but the very most essential radio messages, leaving a total of less than 100 messages for the whole war.

What does the new message say?
Base change?
If so, take the radio operator out of the radio room, until the patrol is complete.

I must do something wrong. I can't seem to get that mod to work Steve.

The messages add to the immersion but the overwhelmning volume does get tiresome quickly. Makes you wonder if you are commanding a sub or a radio room.:shifty:

He's not getting a volume of messages.
He's getting the repeated base change message.
"The base has been changed to St. Nazaire/Brest."
"The base has been changed to Kiel/Wilhelmshaven."
Over and over, because both bases are listed as active simultaniousely.
He can shut it up by evacuating the radioman from the radioroom, until he begins his next patrol, from the new base in France.
Beery's Flotilla Mod fixes that, and other problems, like making the Second Flotilla available at war's start.

I can't see why it wouldn't work. I just re-downloaded it and had a look, and the folders all seem to be in order. You could try installing it directly to Data/Campaigns/Campaign.
You didn't by chance put the compressed folder into JSGME, did you?

Only if you use high time compression. If you never go over 128x those 11,000 messages seem few and far between. One guy who played a 1x patrol even said he was glad to hear them, as they provided a welcome break in the monotony.

LOL that was a good one. I actually kinda enjoy the messages. Makes it more realistic for me. Although I agree at times it gets rather annoying to break time compression just to get a base change message for the 12th time lol. :o
Well hotdam...that be even worse than the obsessive-compulsive Watch Officer.....:O:Hmm, what's the name of the guy. Last name 'Resnig' by any chance? My fortune-teller the other day was overheard mumbling something about a guy serving on a battlecruiser or something, being in charge of a marines squad. Weirdest thing is she mentioned the year 3000AD. Said he'd become very (in)famous. She told of him neglecting to or being too late in reacting to boarding intruders, and countermanding the Commander's crewassignment orders as he saw fit. He loved to hear himself on the internal comm system when he did so.
I asked her if he wasn't also called Bernard by some but she said "No, different guy entirely ... but sharing the same fate".
http://www.3000ad.com/forum/index.php?/topic/27000275-who-is-resnig/
p.s. Unfortunately this thread doesn't do justice to the Paul Resnig story in the BC3000AD game and following releases. For some reason the threads explaining what made him a Commander's Bane got lost over time.

Cant you just edit the english or german radio file. Its just a text file with records attached to dates with parameters like repeat until received.
I like to edit them with messages such as, "The Boston Red Sox just won the 1939 World Series!" or other inspirational messages.

:D...heaven forbid.
I secure WO,Sonarman, and radio guy in the R&R compartment so I can sneak out of port at perisciope depth at FS without being disturbed.
Last time I left Kiel in real time I halucinated and thought Isaw a German Fleet Carrier, complete with a complement of Stukas on deck, at dock in the port.
Or maybe I just had one too many with Phillip while watching Monique at the club.

I never pay attention to the messages. I remove the guy from the radio room. Who cares if U-152 is under attack and sinking? I can't do anything about it and the message doesn't even tell you where the attack is taking place. I wish the radio messages were relevant. I'd like the message from Bdu to say:
-Capt. Apples, your wife is filing divorce papers.
-Your sub has a spy on board. He has a German accent.
-Hey, what's up, haven't spoken in awhile.
-Be on lookout for a troop ship in this area
-An Luftwaffe pilot is downed in such n such a sector. Pick him up
The most fun would be a message to perform a task. Say a message to sneak into a harbor and wait for a spy, operative, down aviator to row out to a designated spot where you have to pick him up. Imagine the thrill of having to penetrate a harbor, and lay in wait, peeking through your scope to find the row boat that you need to meet. That would be more fun that even hunting ships.
Those kind of messages would make the interruption interesting. As it is, I just shut them down.

You said you wanted messages that said certain things. The only way to get that is to do it yourself. Do you expect someone else to spend weeks writing a file so you can be entertained, when you're the only one that wants it?

While it may be based solely on compartment skill level (green bar), which you might max out with only a single hydrophone operator at max skill (don't know), I thought that your ability to be alerted to local ship contacts was related to having a good radio operator?
Steve
frau kaleun
07-26-10, 11:08 AM
Yeah, I would assume that any contact reports that you would get via the radio, you would not get if the radio station was left unmanned.
I know some messages are designed to continue "transmitting" for a certain period of time until you "receive" them, but with contact reports if there's a long enough delay before you receive it, it might be worthless by the time you know about it.

Ya, kind of like many people spent months writing the game so that we could all be entertained. It would have been nice had those same people spent a few minutes crafting some interesting messages. That was my point, so why do you have to be rude, and become hostile? And I am not the only person who would like interesting messages. I think we would all like to see that.
And I didn't want the messages to say THOSE certain things. Those were examples of the KINDS of things that would be cool to read. So again, writing those things myself, would defeat the purpose.
BTW, it was a light hearted suggestion, as anyone could see, including the message about getting divorced, so why didn't you take it as such instead of being snarky? It's not the first time you've done this.

I understand, and I apologize. On the other hand, I become rude because I see people all the time asking others to create things they are not willing to do themselves. Editing that file requires no modding talent, just a lot of work. And you do seem to me to be asking others to do work you could do yourself. Who knows? Maybe you could become famous.

Perhaps it was light-hearted, but your question about writing messages that you would then already know were coming also applies to anyone else who did the work.
As for being snarky, you're right - it isn't the first time. I lose patience quickly with people who expect others to do all the work and refuse to do any themselves. I also apologize a lot, which is something very few others do.
But the bottom line is still the same: You asked if someone could do this, I suggested you do it yourself, and you don't seem to want to. So I will ask again, why should I or anyone do this?

Thanks for your apology Sailor Steve. Much appreciated. I think you misunderstand what I'm saying. I'm not asking for someone to create something for me. It was a suggestion for game developers. Actually, it was not even that. It was just a musing aloud about what would be nice to read to add to the sense of immersion.

Ah, gotcha. That kind of thinking I can understand. The problem with the developers is that they can only think of so much beforehand. The AOD guys put some funny messages in their game, but those were based on real messages and they had that sort of sense of humor. The SH3 devs also had a great sense of humor, but English wasn't their native language, and they had a lot on their minds at the time, so what can we do?
Anyway, thanks for clearing that up.
